After 14 and a half months off the juice, we're back on the juice today. What happened? Well, two months ago I separated from my husband and moved in with my parents. They completely disregard my no dry food rule, as it's high protein dry food, and Heart just loves it so much and won't stop begging. So after increasing dry food consumption, and maybe a contribution from the fact he was getting two much of the topical corticosteroid for his allergy symptoms (my parents also don't listen to me about not letting him outside (allergies), and only giving him the allergy creme twice a day, not five times a day). I guess they just proved that it is absolutely impossible for a child (31) to know better than her parents! Heck no, never happens! And now Heart is paying the price. Sorry, had to vent since I'm so angry with them. Started him on half a unit after giving me 286. I just knew something was wrong since he was drinking/peeing more than usual the last few days and wasn't quite being himself. A fur-mom notices these things!

Sorry to have you back. Let's hope it's a short visit.

I'm a big fan of consequences. Ask the parental units to start coughing up the $$ for Lantus and strips. Maybe dollar signs will get them to listen.

I had to actually stop and think to see if I remember how to give him the injection properly. Was a nice, long honeymoon! So long, I forgot what I was doing!

I second what Sienne said about asking your parents for the $$ to help you care for Heart. After all, it IS their mistake that made him go back on the juice, and not yours.

I, too, hope for a short visit for you and Heart. Wishing for him to make a full and speedy recovery from this carbohydrate attack.

I hope so, too! I caught it early, before any noticeable weight loss or lethargy. Just a few days of more pee in the litter box, week tops. I hope that helps!

Hello Heart's Mom!

Sorry to hear all the stressful stuff going on and that the 'rents ruined Heart's stay at the falls, but hopefully he'll be better soon

It's always a worry when others are taking care - do they follow instructions properly or fudge it? nailbite_smile

Hope you have a good day

Hey Lisa! I was wondering how my handsome Judah was doing and if he had finally gotten OTJ. Sad to see he's didn't and is still on a good-sized dose :(

Michelle: Oh I pleaded with them for months not to give him dry food. They didn't because they weren't going to inconvenience themselves (he's a crier in the morning when he's hungry, so it's easier to leave out dry food overnight)

Also sorry to see the honeymoon is over, but hope you can get it started again quickly!

Just a thought about the food... would a timed feeder with wet food help the morning begging/dry food cycle? you can get one with an ice pack, so it keeps the food fresh. Heart has to be willing to eat cold wet food - but if he is... I'll be happy to get you the name of the one we use, if that would help.

Your Heart is a beautiful boy! Hopefully he is back to the Falls soon! Another possible solution is to dilute the food with some water and then freeze it in ice cubes. Instead of putting out dry food at bedtime, put out a "kitty cube" or two and they'll melt and provide him fresh food later in the night.

Good luck with the parents!! I hope they become more supportive soon.

hi, guys!

binks and I are back due to food issues as well...
hope Heart responds as quickly as my brat seems to be and hurries back to the Falls...

Kathy, I was wondering if such a thing exists. What do you use?

The ice cubes idea might not be so bad either, but not sure how he feels about cold food..

Anyway, he's back to normal. Two insulin shots and completely cutting out dry food again, and he's back OTJ. I think this was a warning and I'm glad I caught it early before it became a permanent thing again.

As for the damage it's done to my relationship with my parents, well, let's just say they had (Canadian) Thanksgiving dinner upstairs tonight and I wasn't invited

Sorry that Heart's back from the falls. Maybe him and Tom decided to have a party over here for a while

We use a timed feeder when we go away so that the sitter only had to come once a day ( that was when Tom was still OTJ, we'll have to adjust now).
We use the Petmate 5 meals. We add lots of water to their food all the time so it stays kinda soupy and we have small ice cubes added to the later servings.

They first ran away when the thing turned but nw they come running when they hear it.
