I'm a newbie to this board and to feline diabetes, but I'm diving into the pool.

I made almost 17lbs of homemade food last night following Dr. Pierson's recipe. Of the 7 cats that turned up last night to see what all of the fuss was about, 2 of them seemed to like it (glad one was Rocky the diabetic!), 3 tried it and didn't eat much, and 2 sniffed it and walked away. This will be an interesting road to say the least! Not bad for a first try at it!

My question is.... I believe I read on Dr. Pierson's page that you shouldn't microwave this food and to warm it up under warm water. How does everyone else do this? To be honest, I think gently warming it in the microwave using the defrost cycle or lower power would be fine as long as you didn't "cook" it.

Yeah... and I think Dr. Pierson even admits to using the microwave. I actually spoon it into a ziplock bag, spoon in a little hot water and then sink it into a container of warm water. It takes a few minutes but if you mash it while in the bag so that the warm water gets to all of it, it makes it lukewarm. My cats don't like it when it is warm so I had to be careful to keep it at room temperature. Sometimes I even had to run cold water over the bag to cool it down. Then I snip the corner of the bag and push it out into the food bowls.

Also, I would take a frozen jar out of the freezer and put it in the fridge at least 12 hours before use. When I use the one from the fridge, I immediately replace it with a frozen one. This way it is soft when I spoon it into a baggie.

I just made a 35# batch on Tuesday night, I microwave mine, 3oz of raw for 6 sec stir and repeat twice will make it Luke warm, I have been doing this since may.

Fair warning about warming up food.

Years ago when we gave my mother her first microwave, she decided to warm up some of the cats' food. It did not take the cats very long to decide that they wanted all of their meals warmed. There was always a group of cats waiting by the microwave.
