Home Testing - Before or After Meals?

I was recommended by my vet to give insulin 30 minutes after meals, but have also seem recommendations to give it sooner. I am about to start trying home testing per recommendations from this forum and can't find an answer on whether the AMPS/PMPS tests should be done pre or post eating? Or if the time between should be shorter than the 30 minutes.

We're still working on getting Margo's appetite back up, and she does tend to take longer with meals even when her appetite is up.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
With hometesting you test first, feed a meal and then give the dose of insulin. Because you are using Lantus, you can give the insulin straight after the meal or while she is eating it…if you know she will eat it for you.
The onset of insulin (Lantus) is about 2 hours after the dose is given so you have time to make sure she eats well.
Then we suggest you get a test in sometime between +4 and +7 after the dose is give to see how far the dose is lowering the blood glucose.
I would also suggest giving 2 or 3 snacks during all the cycles as well as the 2 main meals. A snack is a teaspoon or 2 of normal low carb food.
Try giving the food in the first 6 or 7 hours after each dose.

Your vet is most likely used to prescribing some of the rapid onset insulins where you test, feed your cat, wait 30 min, then give insulin. Bron is correct. Lantus is different. Onset is delayed compared with the older style insulins. With Lantus, you can test, feed and shoot all within a few minutes.
