I successfully tested Jada tonight! I fed her at 5a this morning before I went to work and when I got home I fed her again at 5p tonight. I waited 30 minutes and I performed the test. The reading I got was 100. But now I am not for sure what to do. No insulin? Also there was puke on the floor when I got home and I am not for sure if it was Jada or Gix's. If it was hers this would drive her sugar down right? And after I fed her her blood sugar is only 100. I am confused...

Fantastic! :RAHCAT :RAHCAT Welcome to the Vampire Club!

Did you give insulin this morning or are you just trying the diet change?

Just in case, no insulin shot at that number.

so you shot jada at 5 am? how much insulin and what kind?
this was a definet no shoot.
does your cat nibble all day or gobble up all her food when served.
and are you on a wet canned food diet.

sorry if you've already answered all these questions...just saw you for the first time.

Thanks for the welcome! I was so glad I could do the test! I did give Jada insulin this morning at 5:30a before I went to work. She is on Lantus. She definitely gobbles her food down, right now I am feeding her Iams dry food but I want to switch her to wet food and I have some on hand. So I was reading while I was waiting for a response and the article suggested to retest in 2 to 3 hours. Should I do this? I don't want her sugar to fall while I am asleep or something..because she doesn't free feed i.

well i have a couple of thoughts. she only gets food twice a day? can you leave more out so she can eat during the day/nite if she get's hungry.. it's important if your asleep or not home that she gets to eat..as a diabetic she is likely very hungry and as an insulin dependant diabetic alone at home she should have food available if she dips too low.
how much did you shoot her this morning?

feeding dry and still getting a number of 100. wow! for sure no shot right now. you can test in a bit and see if it's high enough for a shot (generally 200 or higher for a new kitty) but what you're going to do for the rest of the night will depend on how high or when she climbs plus the strictness of your morning schedule tomorrow so stick around and post the next number if you would?

i too need to go back and catch up on your story so i don't ask the same questions again :-) be back in a bit

i'd be willing to bet though that if you could get her on wet low carb food, you wouldn't need insulin or not for very long at least.

ok, read your previous threads now. just want to clarify your dose. you started at 6u once a day and i see where you were told about twice a day dosing and you asked about that but i didn't see anything as to what dose you went to. 1 unit twice a day perhaps? or less? :-)

I'm sorry if I'm missing something (no sleep last night) but you fed, waited 30 minutes, and then tested? I would say that you were seeing a non-fasting glucose level. I would recommend that you test first, THEN feed, and decide if you should shoot. Waiting 30 minutes gives the blood sugar time to rise after a meal. If you want to feed before testing, don't wait so long. From what you posted, no insulin necessary and Jada doesn't appear diabetic, but I don't have any history about what you may have injected before. Laura

I am missimg posts and I am not for sure why? Maybe a delay because I am in Illinois? Well I retested Jada at 7 30 last night, two and a half hours past the first test without being fed before and her number was 56. I paniced a little so I I gave her a little bit of food before I went to bed at 8.30. I gave her 2.5 u yesterday morning because I m trying to bring her units down slowly. I think when I got home the puke was Jadas so I will further reduce the I insulin to 1 if she is in need this morning. Unit dosing is kinda confusing to me. I am going to get an automatic feeder for her and Gix to drop some food mid way before I come home during the day because I know she needs food and I can't leave work to feed her but it might be a little bit. As far as testing before she eats I did not know to do this and I just fed her before I came on here so I guess I will proceed as I did last night and check her BG and give insulin if needed. Now I am nervous because I am unsure, I thought I was doing it right???

The posts should be on your thread. when you come on, choose First Unread posts in the top right hand corner. That will take you to the first post you haven't read.

I would have a no shoot number. Usually we say 200 and under - don't shoot. You can skip, wait 30 minutes and test again to see if he goes above 200. Or shoot a reduced dose - I would choose this option only if I was going to be around to test, if I were a newbie.

wow! i don't think Jada is wanting anymore insulin. :-) which is a good thing.

like has been said, i wouldn't shoot insulin unless you see a number over 200 and given that she is throwing you normal numbers, i'd be leery to shoot much insulin even if you do see a 200. you can't take it out once it's in her so it is safer to shoot less, rather than more so if she does climb back up into diabetic numbers, i'd suggest starting over at 1/2 unit or so

for what it's worth, not on insulin, normal numbers can range from 50-120 thereabouts depending on where you look. i've seen it referenced as 70-150 too
