Does anyone have links or sites they know of that are good for home cooked meals for our fur kids?

The store was out of Racci's favorite food and she absolutely refuses to eat anything else canned! This has been going on 3 days now and I'm forced to give her Dry DM or have her go hypo again. Her numbers are rising and so is her insulin. I keep opening cans & throwing them out. This is ridiculous! I made her tilapia today to supplement the dm but obviously it did not have the supplements she needs which is why I had to add the dm! Grr! She also didn' t move her bowels until I finally put something in her with the dry dm even with the miralax. This is nuts. I have to try cooking for her. She won't eat raw. I already tried that. All she likes is fish!

I'm researching online but you wouldn't believe some of the garbage that's out there! One person is mixing bread in her recipe for her FD! I found 1 good one but would like a few more since it's mostly informational.

Cooking destroys nutrients in food so it's not an optimal way to feed a cat. Is feeding raw food an option? Plain raw meat on its own is not nutritionally complete so you would either need to use a good recipie that uses supplements (like the one on Dr. Lisa's web site) or feed a "frankenyprey diet" which is feeding 80% raw meat, 10% bone, and 10% organs. Of course, there's always commercially available raw pet foods, typically frozen, that you can buy. The Nature's Variety frozen raw is low in carbs for a diabetic. Most feeze dried raw foods are not complete diets so be sure to read the label. Stella and Chewy's freeze dried raw cat food is complete and can be rehydrated in water.

I know of a home cooked recipie that a local veterinary nutritionist has created but it is definitely not diabetic-friendly. It contains potato and rice. And you do need to purchase a pre-mix so that the completed food has all the essential nutrients.

There's also this http://rawmeatcatfood.com/2010/08/16/cooked-meat/ but you do need to buy the TC Feline pre-mix. You could start with cooked and then cook it less and less until your cat is eating just the raw meat mix.
 
I do Dr. Lisa's raw recipe for my cat- who absolutely loves it. Even more now that I made this last batch more raw than normal :lol: .

As it is a long page to go through I did create a short version of the recipe part- only the ingredients and directions only (let me know by PM if you would like me to send it to you) but reading the whole thing helps to understand the recipe better- why you cook the egg whites, what the nutrients are for, etc...

The recipies call for "vegetable sprouts/seeds" and wheat bran. I don't think the wheat bran is suitable for a diabetic. Veggies and fruits aren't a natural food source for cats so I wouldn't bother feeding any. So, no, the recipies don't make sense. To me anyways :smile:

It looks like she did try raw, but hopefully she will keep trying. It can take a little while to cut some cats over. I have had luck topping with fortiflora, crushed dry food or crushed freeze-dried salmon/chicken. Freeze dried liver might work too. I've even mixed in a can of tuna (in water, not oil) into the raw. Another option is to try different meats. Mine adore rabbit though I don't feed it often due to the cost.

Thanks everyone but she won't eat freeze dried and I'm afraid to give her raw. She has a compromised immune system and I don't trust the meat supplies available to me. She practically lives on antibiotics as it is. Her food would have to be cooked. I know I'll have to use supplements, that's not a problem. I just need a recipe that works and holds it all together in pate form.

Thanks for that link, Squeem3. That's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. I could try that with her and see how she takes to it and buy the supplements together with bone.

Racci also has a terrible constipation problem and I'm afraid the fortiflora will be bad for that. I wish I could use it but it says its good for diarrhea. I just can't believe all the screwed up recipes I've seen out there.

What about sprinkling parmesan cheese over the food?

On Dr. Pierson's website you'll see where she mentioned having to cook the meat a little more for one of her cats. That might be something for you to look into. I've used the premixes before, it is a good way to feed raw (or partly raw) while making sure your kitty gets the nutrition she needs. So much garbage is going into commercial canned foods nowadays, I wonder if your cat would be healthier on a raw diet. It helped all three of mine, I thought I was going to have to have them live on steroids for the rest of their lives...and they were kittens!

As far as raw food concerns, on her website you'll see that she addresses those concerns by lightly cooking the outside. I heat my oven to 550 and lightly cook it to make sure I've taken care of bacteria, while being able to have more raw for nutrition.

How about Miralax? There are people here who give that to help with a cat's constipation.
 
Miralax is good for constipation, 1/8 to 1/4 tsp daily. It draw moisture into the stools so be sure to add supplemental water to the canned food.

Fortiflora is a probiotic. Probiotics are good for both constipation and diarrhea because it replenishes the natural good bacteria in the gut, so foods can be digested properly. I use a different live culture probiotic, but Fortiflora is good because it also has "animal digest" which is what is sprayed on dry food to make cats eat the *@^%#$. Just use a little if you are using it to entice to eat, not the whole packet.
 
Parmesan sprinkled on the food really works at my house! I'm transitioning my two cats to raw, and when I sprinkle parmesan cheese on the top, they absolutely love it. And you don't need to add much.
