Most of you have probably already done this, but for the pet parents new to chronic illness or too overwhelmed to have kept track of the calendar —it’s almost Christmas and New Years, and the cold and flu season, and the time for snowstorms, floods, and power outages. So—now would be the time (before places are closed or crowded) to be sure you have all you need for daily care and emergency needs for our kitties.

Refill any meds running low, including those used occasionally, for instance for nausea, constipation or diarrhea etc. Make sure you are set for syringe/needles, lancets, TEST STRIPS, meter batteries, urine test strips, etc. If you know how to give fluids, make sure you have bags and tubing/needles. Make sure you have enticing food for when appetite fails, medium carb food/karo etc, and of course their regular food. Make sure you know where your thermometer is, and that it works. Double check when your vet’s office will be closed and be sure you know the phone number/location of the closest 24 hour pet hospital. Have a lantern/batteries or flashlight/batteries in case you lose power. It’s difficult to draw up insulin or test BG in the dark. Do this even if you have a generator or backup battery—my Powerwall shut itself off in the middle of an atmospheric river event 2 years ago leaving me without any power all night (Tesla swears it was a one in a million fluke).
