Hoarse voice / raspy meows

Hi all -- my little guy's voice turned raspy about a year ago. I was most worried about his thyroid and heart (he has a heart murmur) but all his blood values and ultrasounds were great since then, and as he was at the pinnacle of health, my vet wasn't concerned.

He's been on raw diet, has always been very lean and active, etc., but was still diagnosed with diabetes last week. After only a few days on insulin I've noticed that his raspiness is gone and his voice is normal for the first time in months and months.

This makes me think the issues are connected. Could he have been prediabetic for the past year, hence the raspy voice? Maybe it went undetected because his diet and activity kept it in check up until now. It seems related to his blood sugar. When we get close to his 12 hour mark, the raspiness returns a little bit.

Or could the hoarseness be related to another underlying condition that may have triggered the diabetes? His bloodwork last week still showed no signs of hyperthyroidism or any issues other than diabetes.

Would love to know if anyone has had a similar experience or has any ideas.

Thanks all!

I had that experience.
My cat is in remission now and her voice is back to normal but she seemed to lose her voice too back when she was diagnosed and I noticed it would come and go. Sometimes she would almost squeak.
So far, antijinx, she doesn't have any other conditions.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, Rhiannon! And that's SO WONDERFUL she's in remission!!! I am keeping my fingers crossed I can get my little Mikoman there, too.

Wendy, nope -- this was definitely not an allergy or URI issue. In retrospect, since it was so longstanding and has now cleared up on insulin, seems related to blood sugar, even though his bloodwork and overall health were showing up as wonderful when the hoarseness began.

Thanks, ladies!
