Higher B/G at PMPS?

Hi everyone!

I am fairly new to this whole insulin thing, and my kitty has had good numbers for the AMPS b/g reading, but her PMPS b/g reading has been high the last few days. I know I need to get more mid-cycle b/g numbers but that time unfortunately falls when I am at work or sleeping, so I can only do it on the weekends.

Any suggestions for why she might be having higher readings at PMPS - should I consider increasing her morning shot?

Thanks!

I think there are a couple possibilities. Today, it looks like she might have dropped low for the nadir, so the pmps could certainly be a bounce. She doesn't seem to drop as low at night - not sure why - some times it's activity level differences, food intake differences.

It could be that, if these amps/pmps are consistently different, you could shoot at 11/13. So the pm shot could be at +11 and the am shot could be at +13. I think I'd get more data before I'd try that.

Her numbers aren't bad. The amps looks good and so are the nadirs during the day.

By bounce, do you mean she dropped too low at nadir and her body produced excess sugar to compensate? If so, should I consider a lower dose (maybe .5) for her morning shot?

I really hate not being able to get more mid-cycle readings.

Yes, if she drops lower than she is used to, the next number can be a bounce. It doesn't necessary mean that the nadir is too low, just lower than she is used to. Her nadirs are safe and I don't think too low, at least at this point.

I like your dose in the am. You could give a smidge more in the pm and see what happens, but if you do that, I'd be sure I could monitor at least the first cycle you do.

Thank you - I'm going to try to get up around +6 tonight to check her b/g level so that I have an idea how low she is dropping at night. What a wonderful way for Marbles to wake up in the middle of the night - a nice ear poke. cat(2)_steam

I used to check BG in the middle of the night. My kitty looked at me strange but actually seemed to prefer those tests! She was half asleep so maybe she just didn't care as long as she was allowed to get back to sleep?

That is exactly what happened last night with Marbles, and she bled very quickly too because she was all warm from being curled up in bed.

I tested her at +6 last night (230am) and she was 85 which is a great number! I only gave her .5 this morning to see how that affects the PMPS numbers (since I can't get her +6 number during the day - it's the only thing I can go on right now until the weekend).

That sounds like a plan!

A curve this weekend might help you figure out where the nadir is. And whether that pmps is a bounce or whether the insulin is just fading early in the am cycle. Then you'll know which option might work.

I lowered her morning dose to .5, and I feel much better about her PMPS number now. I went ahead and lowered her PM shot to .5 because I worry she will go too low at night with the lower PMPS number. We will see what happens to the morning number now.
