High numbers??

Had a dka episode a few weeks ago,basically now she is back to normal except her numbers are high,mid to high 300' s. i was using savory shreds to feed her but as of yesterday got her back on her regular diet,ff classics and friskes pates. with some evo dry food. ive just started home testing so for the last couple years i dont know what her numbers were. im using lantus 2units. wondering if i should increase to 2.5? or should i get a new insuljn pen? possible Bad insulin? it seems clear and not cloudy. i transported the insulin to and from vet in a cooler,im assuming they put it in fridge at vet the few days she was there.

Hi, congratulations on starting home testing that's going to make a huge difference and more importantly you are going to keep your kitty safe.

To make it easier to help you with the dose and everything else I think that even if you only have a few tests it would be best if you set up your spreadsheet so that everyone can see your numbers even if there are only a few every data counts, here's the link to how to do it

For what you are saying your kitty is coming out of a DKA episode does he have any other health issues?

Since when has your kitty been on Lantus, and more importantly on the 2.5 dose?

Since you were not testing I'm assuming you weren't following either one of the protocols TR (Tight regulation) or SLGS (Start low go slow ) they are on the yellow stickies at the beginning of the forum I suggest you take a look a them so that you can decide which one fits you and your kittie best, this is important because it will determine when and how you either increase or decrease the dose.

For changing the pen it would depend how long have you been using the one that you have, according to the manufacturer Lantus can stay without refrigeration for up to 28 days, as long as it is kept on a fresh place and not on direct sunlight so yours could be ok, that said if you suspect it's no longer good and you can afford to change to the new one it may be worth the effort

I've used a pen without refrigeration because Babu hates when insulin is cold so he complains big time, but I dispose of it and use a new one after 28 days.

yes the 28 days is if you do not refrigerate

Sorry I had to leave for a while but going back to your question about changing the dose, even though she has been on 2 units for a long time without knowing what her lowest number (nadir) is , is hard to say if she needs a change of dose or not. Latus is dosed on her nadir not on her highest number. Have you done a curve?

If you could set up your spreadsheet it would be easier for someone here to help about the dose

It may take a couple days for the high carb wet food to work its way out of the cat's system.

If you are feeding EVO dry food, you need to do SLGS.

Although the DKA episode is behind you being that is was just a few weeks ago it is still visible in the rear view mirror. I know you dont want a repeat performance.
Careful attention needs to be paid to ensure your kitty gets enough insulin, enough calories and that any infection/systemic stress is addressed.

The ss is essential - the data gathered there helps us to help you and ultimately help your kitty.

Yes i check daily for ketones,she had a small amount eatlier this week but now shows negative! nice to know it takes a few days for other foods to get out of her system,did not know that! they think she got bit by something which brought all this on,the week i moved too. all stressful for her

This would concern me given that she had a DKA episode not too long ago. I strongly recommend you set up a spreadsheet so we can help you with dosing.
