High blood glucose after teeth extractions

Gus had a dental on Thursday in which the last of his 6 teeth were removed (which made me sad, but it had to be done). His blood glucose has been elevated since then. He has had two previous dentals that required extractions.

We are with a new cat only vet and they put Gus on a fentanyl patch - which is coming off tomorrow (Tuesday). He is eating, purring, pooping/urinating.

His blood sugar was over 600 when he came home last Thursday night. Ug! I almost had a heart attack, but of course this is understandable as he only got half a unit of Lantus that morning and he underwent a major surgery. It has been in the low 400s and high 300s since the surgery. I don't remember what happened with his blood sugar after the last dental because it was a couple years ago.

Did anyone else experience elevated blood glucose for a while after surgery? If so, when did you notice it starting to go down?

The vet doesn't seem concerned at this moment about the glucose levels because she said this was a very stressful procedure for him, but in the long run he will feel better. He was also given an antibiotic shot that day.

When mocha had her dental she also went high for a bit .. she never really lowered herself down, but that was common for mocha .. she was always a high numbered kitty!

I am sure once your kitty starts feeling better, and maybe when the patch is removed his numbers will come down .. he's been through quite a bit, and pain and stress can both raise a cat's BG numbers ..

Do you mind me asking what type of AB shot your kitty was given?

Thanks for the response about Mocha's experience.

I'm not sure what the antibiotic shot was. I can find out. It wasn't Convenia. It was a one week antibiotic shot. I will ask them because I have to go back to have his follow up visit.

We were down to 298 tonight! Although that's not stellar by most accounts, that's the first time we have been in the 200s or anywhere near them for that matter, since Gus had surgery last Thursday. I'm hopeful at this point. His fentanyl patch comes off tomorrow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Gus has a complicated medical makeup and I always fear upsetting one thing and causing a domino effect.

Gus's numbers went back up in the 400s after I removed the fentanyl patch. I gave him some buprenex and the numbers returned to the 300s. This tells me he is in pain, plus he wasn't eating as much without the pain meds. I know diabetics take longer to heal so I'm hoping that's part of the reason and that with a little more time he will be back to normal. I can't imagine how it must feel to have this done. It makes me cry that he has lost all of his teeth now and that 6 of them had to be extracted in one go.

We are meeting with the vet tech on Saturday so she can monitor his progress.

I'm sorry gus is still in pain .. mocha had 8 teeth extracted at once so I know how it feels to see them in pain  Were there x rays taken, to make sure all the roots came out? I'm glad you have a follow up appt on saturday ..

How long did it take for Mocha to recover from 8 teeth being extracted?

Yes - they do dental xrays. They also use cold laser therapy to speed healing and ease pain. Its one of the most advanced places in the city of Chicago.

I bought him a new bed last night and he was in it this morning. I'm trying so hard to make things better for him. I don't know what else to do. He actually looks pretty good, but I do think this was shocking for him. He is a very emotional kitty and I do think waking up without teeth has to be hard for anyone. They know something isn't right.
