High BG #'s...

My cat, Munchie, was diagnosed 1.5 months ago. We began with 1 unit of prozinc twice a day, then the vet upped us to 2 units as his numbers were steadily in the 200's ... and the people here suggested that was too high of a bump, to make it more gradual.. so I am giving him 1.5 units twice a day. He eats classic fancy feast, at least 3 cans a day but lately he isn't finishing his 1/2 can feedings (morning and evenings before insulin he eats 1 full can, with 2-3 servings of 1/2 a can throughout the day/night).

Yesterday Munchie's numbers were over 600 (my reLion meter just says hi if it's over 600) and then I managed to get him to 323 by the evening, and then this morning he was at 507. I left the prozinc out for just over 2 hours a couple weeks ago- is it possible that it's no longer effective? he has been peeing outside of his liter box every single day, at least once a day, for about a week. I'm not sure what's going on or what could be happening, looking for any advice and help I can get - thanks!
 
I'm so sorry to hear your kitty is getting such high numbers. Peeing outside the litter box can mean a UTI, but it's also pretty common when a kitty doesn't feel well. It's one of the ways they communicate with us to make sure we know they are sick.

Great job doing home testing! Can I get you to set up a spreadsheet and input some numbers so we can see what's going on? Here is the link for getting it set up, and if you have any trouble just ask and we can have someone get it started for you. You just have to input the numbers and the color coding happens automatically.

thank you, Djamila. I am going to set up the spreadsheet today... he goes to the vet this afternoon to check for a UTI- could that cause his numbers to spike? He has been such a little baby lately, just wants to be held :(
 
Yes, an infection can definitely cause higher numbers. How is he eating? You mentioned he isn't finishing his snacks, but is he eating his meals okay? Along with the UTI test, also ask the vet to check for ketones (they should be able to do that in-house from the urine sample, or a simple blood draw).

I'm guessing he needs more insulin, but we'll know better when we can see the numbers from the past few days. And hugs to you! It's so hard to see our kitties not feeling well! :bighug:

I hope I did this right? I don't always write down his numbers after testing- I try most days but life is busy around here and sometimes I forget the exact numbers by the time he gets his food and such. I'm going to be more proactive about recording now, though. Anyways, this is what I have for now. I hope I plugged everything in correctly?

I can see it. Do you have any tests from before the pm shot? Any mid cycle readings?
 
I put everything on there, pm shots as well as midday readings if I did them... I have the times on my handwritten notes but I didn't see a place to input time on the spreadsheet

The mid cycle shots we put in by how many hours past the shot rather than specific times because we are in different time zones. So if the shot was 6am, then you tested at 10 am you would put that number at +4.
 
I just checked him at +8 from AM dose and he was at 71 on my human relion meter... he has never been this low and I'm not sure what to do?? SOS

Well since this is probably as low as he's going to go I think your safe. Normal on a human meter is 50-120. If you are concerned you could feed a small amount of low carb food.
