Just wanted to pop in and say hello.

I just switched Tiko to Prozinc so am reading up on it and seeing how others are doing. Looks pretty similar to when I was using PZI with my acrocat, but of course Tiko will be different.

How long are most of you holding a dose before raising? Are most trying for a more tightly regulated kitty? Anyone shooting TID?

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to using Prozinc! I think you will like it. I usually try to hold doses for three cycles before changing and then as a general rule only increase by .25 at a time. Good luck!

Hi Carolyn,

Welcome to the ProZinc forum! As you can see from people's spreadsheets, people are doing all kinds of things - whatever seems to work best for their kitty. (as you probably remember, one of the best things about PZI/ProZinc.). Some cats seem to like a consistent dose, some for a week or more. Some seem to like the sliding scale approach. Deb (nckitties) is a real individual. Deb shoots basically on demand, chasing the numbers, so she sometimes shoots TID. WenDawg is trying a split dose. Others started with a consistent dose but most are lowering the dose when they get a lower preshot and maybe increasing a little for a high preshot.

Welcome to the PZI forum! Like Sue said, lots of different techniques are used here. You'll figure out what dance Tiko is doing soon! We're here to help!

Hi and welcome aboard!!
I really like Prozinc and my CL is doing really good on it. It took a while to figure out what kind of dose she needed but after she was diagnosed with Liver Failure I really had to get on the ball and figure out what worked best for her.
I found that she does the best with 3 units 2X@day. Once in a blue moon she will throw such a low number that I can reduce the dose a bit but for the most part the 3 units works well and keeps her numbers low enough that it keeps the strain off her liver. I truly believe that getting a tight reign on her numbers is what allowed her liver to heal enough that she is still here with me today!!
It may take time but you will find out what works best for yours.
We are glad that you are here and you will find some folks with tons of knowledge who can help with anything!! cat_pet_icon

I'm not the 'Individual', Lucian is! Yeah, he is unique for sure! :o

Lucian and I are very pleased with his response to the PZI. After both Lantus and Levemir being disasters, he is doing 100 times better on the PZI. No, he has no schedule, usually gets his shot between +10 and +12, but has gone as far as +15. We did shoot TID for a couple weeks when we first started, but once I began using a sliding scale, he settled down a bit. Adjusting his dose to his BG seems to work better for him. Of course I couldn't do that with depot insulin, so this is better for him.

Hope all goes well for your furbaby too. cat_pet_icon

Thanks everyone!

Maybe I should fill you all in a bit on myself and my experience:

*First joined FDMB in 2006 when my Fletcher, who was my heart and soul cat, was diagnosed.
*Struggled for months trying to get a response to the insulin, and eventually Fletcher was diagnosed as having acromegaly-- I think he was the 4th or 5th on this site to be an acrocat and is one of the few that could go on and off insulin (thank goodness because having to give up to 100 units a day was expensive! lol)
*Decided I really liked having "special needs" kitties, so adopted Gabi when she was about 20+ years old with CRF, completely deaf (she knew sign language though!) and had grand mal seizures
*Adopted Casey through this board, and he has been a diet controlled FD since I got him
*Then I adopted my diva, Greta, who had diabetes insipidus
*I adopted Rex, who had untreatable hyperT (treatment sent him into liver failure)
*My vet called me about a kitty who had been brought in and was clinically dead... but she wanted to give him a chance and so after he was with her for 3 months, Robbie came home with me. He was also diabetic and, of course, not a "typical" FD... but survived a 21 hour hypo and never would respond to Levemir with any predictability
*My vet called me again about Tiko, whose "owners" (they weren't FAMILY) wanted him put to sleep because they didn't want to treat his FD.
*Had Tiko for 2 days before he had a dental... then had an asthma attack the following day and ended up in the ER for 3 days and back with my vet for another day for DKA. (He became my $5000+ cat but luckily Diabetic Cats In Need helped with the cost and my vet treated him for free)
*Tiko had another dental 6 months later (his mouth was horrible) and he went DKA again.
*About a year ago, Tiko went in for yet another dental and had all but 2 teeth pulled... and went into DKA again. Amazingly, he was OTJ at the time and continued to stay that way despite the DKA
*Tiko can only remain at the vet's for 2 days before he starts to shut down (despite me visiting daily and giving him clothes I've slept in) so he comes home sooner than most kitties can/should
*Tiko needed insulin a few months ago, so we restarted Lantus but weren't getting any response so decided to try Prozinc
*And here we are!

Welcome Carolyn,

I'm the "late one" weighing in.

My grandkitty, Hank, has only been on ProZinc for a month but am very happy with the flexibility it has.

Hank just since yesterday, is now totally on wet food. So his numbers are all over the board and driving me crazy!!

Carolyn, you are an amazing person! A true guardian angel for special needs kitties. Bless you.

Welcome to the Prozinc side. I need the flexibility of Prozinc because of my work schedule. And with Ben, I had to hold steady doses for 3-4 days to keep him from bouncing. He didn't like to change quickly. I found it handy to put a colored row when it was time for a dosage change. Kept me from getting too impatient. And then suddenly, he seemed to realize what he was suppose to do. Now I'm trying to find the perfect lower dose for his blues and greens.

Good luck!
