Bast and I are figuring this blood test thing- I now know I can't get a good sample from the back of the ear and he will just sit on a blanket for the test better than in my lap. I got 2 "hi" readings this morning but i think he was eating before the test. I had left food out last night and I think he got up before me and was eating. He had food on his mouth when I woke up.... That will affect the reading I am sure,
I will have to get a timer or not leave food out at night.

I gave him the 1 unit as normal and watched him scarfing his food! The first time I have seen him really want to eat. He likes the Trader Joe Tuna for cats! So now i know what to mix with other foods.

Have to go to work but may came home at lunch for a test. My SO is still to scared to do it. He is home today to keep an eye on him.

I'm sure some much more experienced board members will be along soon to give you some advice; however, my initial response to you would be to check the booklet that came with your meter - it should state the reading above which a display of 'HI' is shown. This will at least help you (and others who respond to your post) know exactly what you and Bast are dealing with.

Have you got access to keto-diastix urine test strips and/or does your blood glucose meter test for ketones also? If you can, your first priority should be to establish whether ketones are present or not. This will help you to judge how serious a situation you are dealing with, whether this requires a phone call to the vet etc.

Can you get a post-insulin shot blood glucose test to check that your kitty is back within a more normal range?

Good luck!

H

PS - I'm just starting out with this whole home testing thing as well, and even in such a short period of time I'm noticing it getting easier. And my cat is not an easy kitty to test!

Hello from the depths of the UK.

Not sure how far you are into the treatment, but generally the glucometers say 'hi' when the blood sugar is too high for them to measure (in the UK and on my glucose monitor I think this is about 33 mmol (not sure what that corresponds to in US numbers). Its definately a point to be testing for ketones in the urine to make sure your cat doesn't go into DKA which i've heard can be pretty nasty. Readings post food are generally higher than pre-food (for obvious reasons) but it still sounds like he's pretty hyperglycaemic.

In the first few weeks of our cats' diagnosis, he registered 'hi' on the monitor several times (and regularly posted numbers in the upper 20's and 30's) - but has gone on to go (currently) into remission - so keep monitoring and testing and am sure things will calm down. If you get a few more numbers like that I would think about discussing an up in the insulin dose with your vet, but gradually. As our FD counsellors in chief Diana and Elizabeth would say - its a marathon not a sprint! :)

You're doing all the right things so just keep checking and keep posting.

Hi Misty,

Am I right in thinking that Bast has only been on Lantus for a couple of days? It'll take a little while to 'kick in' (and build up a 'shed'), but yes, clearly there is high blood sugar there... Do please also post your message on the Lantus TR forum. That will catch the attention of a lot of Lantus people who may not routinely look at the general FDMB forum.

And yes, as has been suggested, do please also test your cat for ketones using Ketostix/Ketodiastix from a pharmacy to test Bast's pee.

Do try not to worry. It's early days. I'm betting that a month from now things will seem a whole lot better.

Hugs to you,

Elizabeth

He had ketones and was at the vet for 5 days He was diagnosed last tuesday and stayed at the vet until mon morning. I can't get him to pee for me. Tomarrow I am home so I will get more tests and try to get pee (if I don't tonight).

I have ricon prime from walmart meter it says Hi is over 600 EEKK. So I am going to try to test him at break from work (no lunch for me!). I had to run to work this morning. He is also on amoxicillyn right now for a UTI- wonder if that affects the numbers...
