Hi...New here!. Rupert diagnosed Jan2, 2012

Hi there, totally new to all of this but we seem to be managing well. Nice to find such a great place for info. I've printed a lot of stuff off.

not sure how to include a picture of Rupert, who is a male 'tuxedo' cat, 13 years old. Always been super healthy.

Currently have him OFF all dry food, eating mainly Merrick canned food (cowboy cookout and surf and turf) along with tuna, and pieces of steak as a treat (yes, he's spoilt, as are the other four cats in the house!). He's started on lantus and at the beginning it was all over the place. His levels were off the charts when we took him to the vet (thought he had a tooth abcess!)...he tested over 500 (33 in our measurements - we are in Canada)....was sluggish, dehydrated and generally sad. Started on lantus at 2 units BID. numbers all over the map for a while, but I'm getting really good at testing his levels at least 2 to 3 times a day. this past week things seem to really be coming together... not sure how to post the graph I have? but his highest highs are steadily dropping and his lowest lows are slowly normalizing.. he's up to 2.25 units BID

I think he's getting close to regulating. apologies if this format is all wrong and goofy, new to this forum! do you think I'm overly optimistic in thinking that he might go into remission given how quickly this has come down? He was on Royal Cannin dry food (expensive stuff and I was horrified when I figured out the carb level? jeesh!). Now he's just on wet. He is acting like normal again, running around, being bossy, good appetite, drinking way less, peeing way less, looks like our old cat. Hoping we caught it in time.

Welcome! What a beautiful boy! It sounds like you have done your research and gotten a good diet and good insulin.

oh, and I have my first real question!

the vet was saying that the proteins in his urine were super high and had in fact gone UP since he was first diagnosed... but then during that time i'd changed him to a high protein low carb diet. she said that could be the reason, but was still concerned at how high the protein level was in his urine.

so I'm confused. Everything I've read so far says that cats are supposed to be on a high protein/low carb diet.. he's on the Merrick stuff (fairly high fat I think.. hope that's not a problem, his weight is good).... but should I be worried that he's getting too much protein? is there such a thing? wondering if the protein in the urine is an indicator of something else going on, although if you didn't know he was diabetic you would NEVER guess there was a thing wrong with this big boy, glossy coat, bright eyes, eating well, drinking normally, etc.etc. Only time he look sick is the minute he goes to the vets - they've actually agreed that doing the BG curves at home myself is far better for him. Said they'd never seen a cat get so instantly depressed and dehydrated the minute he sets foot inside the vet clinic!

anyway, sorry for all the confusion... still figuring this out.. just wondering if there are any dangers to feeding a high protein diet? thanx again.

I can't answer your question about protein in urine or to much protein.
So I will just say hello & welcome! ;-)
