My 14 year old male Bengal cat was just diagnosed last week. I have had type 1 diabetes for over 30 years, but injecting a cat is different! The vet told me to use the scruff, but I am having a hard time getting enough fat to pinch. Even at 15 pounds, he is all muscle. Any suggestions on getting a good pinch? Also, I saw the diagram with other areas to inject, any guidance on how to make sure I am using the right area? His numbers are coming down, so I think I am getting the insulin in... just sometimes i am worried its a "skin" shot and not going into the fat!

Thank you and I look forward to learning and sharing when I can!

Hi and welcome to the best club you never wanted to join (I stole that from @Wendy&Neko iirc) haha

Prince is ab-sol-ute-ly gorgeous! What a beauty. I've always wanted a Bengal but also....no thank you! We have six cats and 4 of them are Siamese or related and that is enough talkative felines for us...LOL

I am sorry to say that I am no expert on shooting the insulin, we never had an issue using the scruff on Hendrick. Hopefully someone else around here can offer some helpful tips.

With cats, the injection is done subcutaneously (under the skin).
Tenting the skin should allow you ample room to inject into a pocket between the skin and muscle.

You could try the side of chest or the flank.

I do side of chest and have shaved an area about 2"x2" and makes it easier to see where needle goes in.
Here's a pic of my cat and here's the shaver I used, super easy shaved him when he was eating and he hardly noticed.

There's gotta be some loose skin somewhere on that beautiful Bengal boy! ;)

I was told to shoot the scruff but it just wasn't working. I had both our boys lay down on their side and poked them in what the above illustration calls the flank. Maybe a better description would be just above and in front of the hip joint.
so I think I am getting the insulin in
If you're not sure the shot went in and whether or not the fur feels wet please do not give him another shot. A "fur shot" is what we call a miss and it's a common mistake, double dosing a cat would be a huge mistake. This will all get easier, we promise.
