chutamas and Inky

Hi I'm new to the board. Actually i have read the board for quite a while since Inky ( my little boy) has been diagnosed with diabetes ( ~ 6 weeks ago , just one day after my birthday , such a news to get during the birthday T.T ). The board is really helpful and help me a lot to deal with his diabetes. Since he get lantus Inky is getting better. Still i have problem adjusting his dose. I guess one thing is because i really can't control his food. He is having k/d ( canned and dry , mostly canned though ) with my other cats >.<
And second thing is that I have problem filling the syringe to the right amount. I couldn't find half unit mark syringe anywhere in Thailand. 0.5 insulin syringe is only thing we have here. So i really have a problem when i have to adjust the dose with just 0.25 unit. Everytime i did it , i just guessed , i have no idea that i really increase or decrease the dose for 0.25 U T.T Anyone have any suggestion how to do it with 0.5 cc syringe that have only 1 unit marker. Plz help >.< thank you so much.

p.s i hope inky sheet is posted with this post too , i have tried to set it up and i hope it will work

chutamas this is really a strange problem...read your ss. put a 911 next to it as no one seems to be addressing it. i know it's not potentially a 911 but i'm pzi and cannot help you but i do think it needs looking at.

Hi and welcome to LantusLand (LL for short)! You will find a lot of help here, so glad you found us.

On the syringes, I order mine online from Hocks. There is a green link at the top of the page. I'm not sure if they can ship to Thailand but it is worth a try. These are the ones I use, http://hocks.com/hocks-healthcare/hocks-product/A740030.html If you can't order online, see if a local pharmacy can special order them for you, print out the page to show them exactly what you need.

If still no luck, fill one unit in the syringe and carefully squeeze it out (you can probably use water, but I'm not sure if the viscosity matters), count how many drops are in the 1 unit. When you need to do a half or quarter unit measurement, over draw the dose and squeeze out the right number of drops. Be sure to be consistent in the size of the drops. It helps to twist the plunger to get very small amounts of insulin out. A hands free magnifying lens helps too.

Good luck and see you soon.

Hi and welcome!

I know many people order online for supplies, so maybe you can do the same to get the syringes with 1/2 unit markings.
Also, what about ordering them through your vet?

If you cannot get them you can use a magnifying glass to make it easier to guess.
Do a google search online for "gooseneck magnifying glass"

Below is the magnifier I bought. I clip it to a kitchen cupboard and measure

Sorry, I forgot about the first question. The KD diet is not good for diabetic cats, no matter what the maker or you vet says. The canned is 29% carbohydrates and the dry is 35%. Diabetic cats need less than 10% carbohydrates in their diet. There are many regular canned varieties that are well within this level. I don't know what you have available for brands, but here is a link listing many available here. http://binkyspage.tripod.com/canfood.html Read as much as you can on cat nutrition here is another great site http://catinfo.org/

All cats are better off on a low carbohydrate diet and can eat the same food as your diabetic cat. DRy food is always much higher in carbohydrates, don't feed it to any of your cats. Many of us make our own raw food for our cats, very low carb and can be quite economical. Many of even the cheapest canned foods are actually better than the prescription diets, which are very expensive. Read the labels. Look for foods, without, grains, fruits or vegetables.

You will be amazed at how quickly Inky's BG will come down on low carb. food, BE CAREFUL! He may drop so suddenly that the high dose of insulin may need to be reduced a lot. It could lead to a Hypo situation, monitor carefully.

Thank you so much your guys suggestion ^^ and quick response.
Lori, i'm so happy when i saw your first reply ,first i'm so scared that no one will reply me >.<
Ann,I visited hock.com already ,but they don't deliver their item to thailand. I went to many local phamacies, they all don't have it. I have also checked with the BD representative , but they don't imported this 0.3 cc syringe to thailand
I will try the suggestion you gave me about counting the drop. I have never thought about it before. It's really a good idea.
About the k/d food , i will try to work on it. I have to use it cause the other one of my cat , he start to have kidney problem ,so the vet prescribe it for him , so all my 3 cats have the k/d since then >.< It's so hard to seperate their food.
Gayle ,I will look for the magnifier that you suggest , actually i have one that i'm using ,but it's not so handy, the one you show me seem to be better .
Glad to find this board ^^

did anyone take a look at her ss, she surfing the reds

Hi Lori ,
Thank you so much for your concern about Inky'ss. Actually he is doing ok,not in red for long time until yesterday when i was not home during his shot time , so i had to ask my aunt to give inky a shot and then the reds show up.
My aunt is 65 years old and i think she may not see the mark in the syringe well , and she may miss the right dose.
That is why i really want to get the better syringe , incase i was not home again. It seems like his number is coming down tonight, but i will continuely checked it every two hours. One more sleep deprivation night :o ( In thailand now is night time , around 12 hours faster than USA ).

The surfing of the reds is alarming, but according to the notes on the SS, a relative gave last night's shot and might have messed it up. If these high numbers continue through the next 2 cycles, you might consider raising the dose again just to keep away the possibility of ketones.

Micro dosing using 0.5cc syringes is difficult. I was just given 2 boxes of similar syringes by someone local to me and I know exactly what you mean. I just have to hold the syringe close up to my eyes and twist the plunger so that it barely moves. Doses like 3.25 I fill like it is a "fat" 3 unit dose (just slightly over the line) and 3.75 would be like a "skinny" 4 unit dose (just slightly under the line). Hope this helps!

maybe you could pre-fill the syringe for whoever will be shooting your kitty. that way they don't have to figure it out?

From the How to Handle/store Lantus/Lev stickie...
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=151

Actually pre-filling syringes is not recommend, but you could mark a used syringe with a marker or tape to the dose line. That seems to help a lot.

Practicing with used syringes also helps measure out the same dose consistently.
