Hi from me and Bobby!

Hi from the UK! Bobby is an Egyptian Mau and lives with his sister Violet and our other 6 cats. He has been diagnosed with diabetes for a couple of years now and been stable on Senvelgo however he's been having bad diarrhoea and the Senvelgo is the most likely culprit- so he's switching to insulin (Prozinc) on Friday. We've had a diabetic cat before, she was on caninsulin and was monitored by regular fructosamine tests at the vet. We'll be monitoring Bobby at home so a bit of a change! I've ordered an Alphatrak 3 which we'll be using for glucose curves as I believe there is a handy app - however I'm thinking of also ordering a cheaper human one for day to day testing. I've seen good reviews for the Gluco Navii.

Welcome to FDMB
Prozinc and Lantus are the best insulins for cats is easy on them, you do not need an expensive or pet meter, any human monitor and strip is good, most of all members use the ReliOn human glucometer and strips, if you mare in US you can purchase it at Walmart, and doing curves at home is the smartest thing to do, cats are very sensitive to stress, so doing a curve at the Vets will only result in high glucose levels and risk of vet increasing the dose unnecessarily, I assume that by you having experience in FD you are aware that they need to have a diet of wet can or raw food between 0-10% carbs

@Elizabeth and Bertie I've just tagged one of our experienced members whose in the UK. Hopefully, she'll be checking in soon.

One of the side effects of Senvelgo is diarrhea. Sorry about that! Prozinc is a very good insulin for cats. You may want to read through the sticky notes at the top of the Prozinc forum so you have more information about the insulin and how we approach dosing.

Since you'll be home testing, this post on helping us to help you provides instructions for setting up a spreadsheet and your signature. The spreadsheet will allow you to track your cat's progress and allow us to follow along. The signature will give us some basic information about your kitty so we don't pester you by asking the same questions all the time. Hopefully, you're already familiar with the low carb foods that are available in the UK.

Hi Eleanor and Bobby, waving to you from Surrey. 🙂

Prozinc is a good insulin for cats. And well done, you, for wanting to test Bobby's blood glucose at home. Yay!
And yes, quite a few in the UK use the Gluco Navii meter. Just be aware that pet meters and human meters 'read' slightly differently. Pet meters 'typically' read a bit higher than human meters, and vice versa. Both are 'correct', but it's just a matter of understanding that there is that difference. The Alphatrak will read closer to what your vet would see from a lab result.

Keeping fingers and paws crossed that Bobby's tummy settles down soon. If there's no change after the switch to insulin then it may be necessary to look for other causes.

Thanks everyone, Bobby is on day 2 of the insulin nkw - 1.5 umits a day to start, and although he's still runny down below he seems to be going less than he was and not straining as much so fingers crossed it'll clear up.

I tried and failed to get a blood sample when the Alphatrak 3 arrived, but he was at the vets the next day and the vet talked me through doing it using their one and I managed it! He gets very wiggly at the vets so I needed a bit of help.

His first insulin shot was fine - and it's been even easier at home as he's just a big softie most of the time.
