Hi, all new Lantus user

Hi, all my 16 year old cat Loki has been diabetic for over 1 year now and has been on PZI, his vet today changed his insulin to Lantus. I am reading all I can about this insulin to educate myself. I posted in Feline health and here is that post. viewtopic.php?f=28&t=92545
Also, he said NOT to refrigerate the insulin, seems strange to me but I guess it could be, not knowing much at all yet about this insulin I am not sure. Ok off to read up and and learn.

Leaving it unrefridgered is for humans since they use it up very quickly, since cats take such a teeny tiny dose you will want to keep yours in the fridge so you can use it up to the very last drop. Also humans don't keep the Solostar pens in the fridge because getting cold can effect how the pen itself works, but again since we don't use the pen to do the actual injections and use a needle and syringe instead it doesn't matter if the pen mechanism works correctly for us. We basically use the pens like mini vials.

The other things you don't want to do with Lantus is you don't roll or shake it, and you don't want to shoot air or extra insulin back into the vial or pen.

Thanks so much for the info on how to keep the Lantus, will be getting it on Monday, so to use it just take out of fridge and go for it. I was looking at the Lantus forums and it looks like there are 2 of them, which one should I be in to post? Loki will start with 1 unit at AMPS and 1 unit at PMPS numbers permitting of course. I have a 200 no shoot also.

Really it doesn't matter which one you post to, they are just different protocols and ways of posting..we are a smaller group over here so we have a much more relaxed way of posting...like you don't need to open a condo everyday if you are busy, or you can. You don't have to link your last post to your current one. And for the most part we tend to follow the Start Low Go Slow protocol with a few variations..like we don't reduce the dose if the cat gets a reading under 90 but still wait for a newly dxed to get a reading under 50, and for a long term diabetic like my Autumn under 40.

Well and we tend to do more just chit chatting over here because we are a small bunch. So if you like being a social butterfly and just want to chat as well as get help with Loki we are a fun group to hang out with.
