Hershey +6 (404) - how much does vomiting impact #?

Good morning -

This morning Hershey had his 5th dose at .8u. He eats only wet Wellness; Oreo is finishing up the dry we had on hand, along with wet Wellness. Apparently, I blinked at feeding/shot time - Oreo walked away - Hershey jumped on the chance to get to Oreo's bowl. I didn't count how many pieces of dry were in the bowl, but I don't think there even a dozen and when I intervened there were four. So, at most he ate ~8, although I didn't hear any crunching so I think it was mostly (if not completely) wet Hershey ate. I already feed him extra at shot time (1/4 can, plus an additional 1/8 can). AMPS was 451

We were already wondering about his numbers - last night PMPS (297) and +4 (323) - seemed to be the wrong direction, but trying to give it time...

Anyway, we got up to do the +6 test and found vomit. It looked like someone had overeaten and was 'returning' the extra. Oreo has no history of vomiting and this food isn't new to him, so I'm 99.97% sure it was Hershey. Would that account for the +6 (404)? (How much does vomiting change the numbers?) or do we need to just take a deep breath and wait for him to adjust to the dose?

Posting in HEALTH because I figured the vomiting part was a generic question no matter what the insulin.

Thanks a bunch!

Good morning, Libby.

It's that ECID thing. For some kitties, just a few pieces of dry can raise bg levels, and vomiting can cause stress which could raise the numbers. I would write it off as an odd cycle.

It does seem like his numbers are rising. I would post in PZI before your PM dose and get some ideas.

If there is any chance he has been dabbling in the dry when your back was turned, that might be the reason for a few higher cycles.

If Oreo will eat the wet, I would eliminate any chance of dry for Hershey by getting it out of the house. If you want to have it for a potential hypo, you could put it in a plastic sealable container somewhere. (they have been known to break into cupboards and bags.......)

Thanks, Sue.

I know Hershey hasn't been getting into the dry because one of us is standing there watching until Oreo finishes and then removes his bowl.

Haven't had a cat break into a cabinet, but Oreo will tear open a bag in a minute - and what a MESS a bag of litter (or cat food) can make when the Rascal tears a whole near the bottom of a brand new bag!

I'll post in PZI and see what kind of response I get about his numbers.

Thanks, again -

Libby

I think not only is it ECID, but every day is different too. Sometimes whatever they vomit has been making their numbers creep up and now that it is gone, they go down. Sometimes the mere act of vomiting shoot the numbers up. I just discount whatever number we get right after a vomit as affected by the puke and go one from there.
