Good morning! Hershey is almost 10 years old and was diagnosed Nov, 2010. We immediately started reading and changed him to Wellness canned food. Last Friday (4-1/2 days - 9 shots), he started on 1 unit ProZinc twice a day, with almost non-existent vet support (but that's another topic ;-) ).

I have read so much that I can't tell you where I read it anymore, but know I read that it takes time for them to get leveled out on the insulin. How long until we should start seeing some consistent numbers? I was starting to get used to less pink and more blue on the SS (even a few green!) until yesterday. Is that normal? Is there something else we should be doing/not doing?

Also, does it matter where he gets his shot - as far as numbers? Doug has been rotating between hips and around the shoulder area (a little lower than the scruff). I started indicating where he gets it so we could compare.

And - Hershey had hip surgery several years ago, could that (maybe scar tissue) make a difference in the absorption in that hip?

Thank you -

Hi and welcome,

I does take some time to get them leveled out but ECID. Your numbers look really good though.

Shooting the shoulder, flank or hip is good, there is alot of looser skin there to shoot into. Some feel it absorbes better in those areas.

Those mid cycle 52's are a little low, I mean they are great because they are nice non diabetic numbers but they are getting close to numbers that you would need to intervene with higher carb food to bring him up some. I'm NOT trying to scare you, I just want to see you keep him safe.

What meter are you using?

I think I would skinny up that 1 unit.

You are doing a great job, welcome to our group.

Robin - Sorry, I just noticed I didn't answer your question about our meter. We're using the iPet.

Hmmm - I guess the dose he's about to get officially begins our second week. We're shooting closer to the .75 mark now, but wouldn't mind someone taking a look at his SS and giving some feedback.

Thanks!!

Libby

If you are able to get some numbers today that will help with the picture. The 1u seemed a bit much for Hershey, and the .5u too little. I'm hoping the .75u settles in for some nice numbers, a gently soft curve (blues, a little yellow or green) with shootable PSs (yellows). Robin could have hit the nail on the head with a skinny 1u. Depending on today's numbers, I'd be tempted to try that if Hershey stays a little high on the .75u.

Thanks, Teresa, for the feedback. I'm sure upping it a tiny bit will be easier when we have the u100's and that should be in a couple of days.
