My cat's blood sugar is 52 and I have to go to work in 5 minutes. Should I have my daughter give her 1/4 unit after she (cat) eats? I can't retest her. I won't be home for about 13 hours.

Sorry, I had to say that real fast because you said you had to leave. Yes, skip the dose.
Can your daughter test?

She can, but she is only going to be there for 1/2 hour. She will be back after midnight so she could test her when she returns. But I don't think she could measure 1/4 unit.

You do not want to give any insulin at this 52 BG.
I was thinking that it would be good if your daughter could test after your kitty eats, just to make sure that she is going higher, and if not, then maybe your daughter could give her some higher carb food. I would ask your daughter to test before she leaves the house, at least, and when she gets home tonight, and please leave some extra food out for your kitty to eat in case she goes lower. Lantus has a cumlative effect and she could possibly still go lower even though you skipped the dose.

Hi, this is Terri's daughter. I just tested Midnight, and her blood sugar level is 308. Should I do anything?

The 52 pre-shot may mean the cat went much lower before that. The following high number may be due to compensatory hormones releasing a stored form of sugar from the low.

If you were going to give insulin, I'd drop further to 0.25 units. You'd be 'shooting the bounce' from having gone so low. With that previous low pre-shot on such a small dose, I would not stay at 0.5.

You could see if feeding and waiting 2 hours to test results in lower levels. If it does, that means the pancreas is starting to kick in again.

Did you mean in general, or last night?

I don't know what is going on with this big fluctuations. It hasn't been this up and down before. Several mornings it was below 200 and last night it was below 200. I am pretty comfortable with 0.5 units, and since I just decreased the dose, I need to wait a few days at least, to see what her blood sugars do. I am going away for a week at the end of the month and the cat sitter probably won't test (I am not sure who it will be yet). I am lucky if the cat sitter will feed and shoot twice a day. It isn't that easy to find someone around here who can give insulin!! So anyway, I need to feel comfortable with the dose before I leave. I have been posting on the "relaxed lantus" board about this and they have been guiding me.

I am not quite sure if I should be posting this here or on the relaxed lantus board. Last night I just posted here because I needed a quick answer since I was leaving for work, and I thought there was more chance of someone seeing my post right away on this board.

Hi the

You can post on either or both. Quite often the same people advise on both but if you have an emergency I would post on both as well as the lantus tight regulation board as its very active.

To me it looks like midnight is bouncing which is all normal, however it could also mean he might be in for another decrease soon. Since you aren't testing at night, which is very unfortunate since many cats drop low at night, it makes it hard to get the full picture. Many of us have our shots scheduled so we can do them say at 8pm and a before bed test at 10pm so we can see what they re doing at night. Plus we set the alarm occasionally to getup for a quick mid night test.

Also since you are away especially and your sitter can't test, I would suggest you drop to 0.25 units.. See pic below. I would also leave a syringe with food coloring in it for your sitter to use as a reference.

Looking at the SS I am thinking maybe not quite ready for no insulin. 0.25IU would be worth a try and safe while you are gone. I always reduce dose when I am away as its better to have them a little high for a while than too low once.
