Hoping for some suggestions from the wise- my 14 yr old kitty was diagnosed with diabetes last week. Vet wants to start her on 1 unit of insulin. After doing the morning shots this weekend, she was very "off", like she was drunk. Couldn't keep her eyes open, couldn't walk well, and was very different. The vet said this wasn't normal but wasn't likely to be low blood sugar because it happened so fast after the shot. They would like to do a freestyle libre monitor and have me bring her in after giving the shot to watch her. I am not comfortable continuing with insulin shots when it obviously affects her this way and no one is home to watch her. Has anyone experienced this before???

What insulin is she on? Was there a change in her diet from a high carb to a low carb food?

I would definitely not recommend giving her insulin unless you can test her and see how low she is going on it.
Do you know if she has ketones? Could you check with your vet if she tested for ketones at diagnosis?

Thanks for responding! Prozinc is the insulin. the instructions from the vet are to start insulin twice a day and then after 2 weeks, they give you a freestyle libre to check the levels for 2 weeks to see if the amount needs to be adjusted. I have no idea about ketones!

The best way to rule out that low blood sugar is to test her. Do you have to wait 2 weeks to get the Libre? If so, you can buy a meter and strat testing her at home. Most of us use human meters.

If you are in the US, a popular meter is the Relion Prime from WalMart. The meter is only $9 and the strips are $17.88 for 100.

After reading some here, it seems that most vets do not suggest giving insulin without checking sugar levels but that is what my vet is suggesting. They want you to give shots twice a day and no checking. They didn't feel her reaction was due to low blood sugar but I just don't know.

I believe that if you don't know, you don't shoot. Call your vet. If they did bloodwork, they probably have the ketone information. Ask for the results to be emailed to you ASAP.

I have a video in my signature showing how I tested my cat CC at home. You could do a half unit instead. What were her numbers at the vet when she was diagnosed? What are you feeding?

Just to make sure, you are only filling the insulin to the 1 line, not the 10 line, right? It should only be a few drops. I am because we've seen that mistake on here before. It would be the very first line of the syringe is marked with whole units and the second line of its marked with half units.
