Hi I have a 10 year old female lily .. diabetic 1 year.. has been in remission twice currently on 1 unit of lantus 1 time a day. 2 times her BG dropped too low. Eats ff pate or flaked can only. Acts great , eats a lot still. Litter box habits are 5 pee I poop daily. Pretty consistent. Weighs 7.3 pounds never been big. Recent curve was 285 to start and then dropped slowly every 2 hour test and was 185 at 6 hours after insulin. Vet was happy. I’m concerned. She is hungry by 500 am and eats a lot for morning. Today she ate and had her **** then threw it all up. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

You're not doing anything wrong. Unregulated cats are ravenously hungry.

Lantus is meant to be given twice daily for best effects tho. It doesn't last 24 hours in the system. What do you mean by "dropped too low" how low did she go?

Can you do a spreadsheet so we know her numbers and how often you are testing? It's hard to advise without seeing the data. Instructions to set one up are here:

Welcome. Lantus works best when given twice a day. Why not divide the dose and give .5 each dose? There are syringes with 1/2 unit markings. I used them and digital calipers. Are you using a human or pet meter? It would be helpful to set up a spreadsheet. Sorry she vomited. How soon after eating? Do you have her latest blood work? Poor baby and poor you. You must be so worried.

Like the others have mentioned, we tend to be very much numbers driven. It will help us if we can see what your test results look like. It's likely that your meter holds about 2 weeks worth of information. If you could enter that data on a spreadsheet we will have a means of seeing what you've been seeing.

Is there any chance that Lily is eating too fast? Some cats can "scarf and barf." This can happen if numbers are low or if numbers are high. Also, if she's at all constipated, sometimes straining in the litter box can cause a cat to vomit.

If Lily's lowest point is in the 180s, that's a safe range. Normal blood glucose is 50 - 120.

She probably ate too fast. If you are only feeding twice a day try 4 smaller meals instead. Just no food 2 hours prior to the preshot test so the number is not food influenced.
