Booger tested at 441 pmps on the alphatrak and 310 pmps on the ReliOn meter. I can only assume that since two hours have gone by and he has gone up to 611 on AT and 512 on the ReliOn that the insulin I gave him didn't actually go in him. He was giving me trouble giving him his shot. Normally he doesn't but this time he did. This is the only time I have seen him go up +2 after getting insulin. Not sure what to do.
 
This is the last thing he needs just when he was doing well on 2.25 dose.......... I feel like I am completely failing him at this point.
 
I believe the usual response to a missed shot is to just skip it until his next scheduled shot. It happens, not your fault. I even injected myself one time. Lol
 
I agree with the above. Don’t reshoot. Give yourself a break. You are not a failure. You’re doing great! Furshots are annoying but we’ve all done them. Just start fresh tomorrow :bighug:
 
I’m not an expert on ketoacidosis, but my understanding is that ketones are caused by a combination of not enough insulin, not enough food & some other factor such as an infection or stress. I don’t think one night is worth the risk of reshooting and possibly going hypo...

Ketones are usually caused by infection + lack of food + lack of insulin. They can also be caused by prolonged high blood sugar. I think you'll probably be okay for one night, especially if Booger has never had ketones before, but if you are worried you could always contact a vet or 24 hr clinic and ask for their clarification.

Ketones are the chemical byproduct produced when the body burns fat for fuel. Without the right amount of insulin, glucose starts to build up in the blood stream and doesn't enter the cells. The cells burn fat instead of glucose, and ketones form in the blood and spill into the urine.
 
Thank you. He had ketones when he was first diagnosed. I kept smelling a sweet chemical like smell around his mouth. This is what prompted the vet to run blood work and test for diabetes.

Testing his urine for ketones with human test strips from a pharmacy is a good way to stay on top of this. Have I posted this for you before?
  • put the end of the test strip right in his urine stream as he's peeing
  • slip a shallow, long handled spoon under his backside to catch a little pee - you don't need much
  • put a double layer of plastic wrap over his favourite part of the litter box and poke some depressions in it too catch pee.
Most test strips have to be dipped and allowed to develop for 15 seconds before viewing the colour change in very good light.
 
He barely ate anything this morning but ate quite a bit of dry food this afternoon. I had wet down as well but he went with the dry. I want him to go to wet food full time but at this point I would rather him just eat.
 
I'm glad he's doing well, and eating! :)

ETA: I love his pic, looks like he's smiling. I had a tux with a smile who was one of my special luvs.
