Help!

My cat, Max, was diagnosed with diabetes a few months ago. We started him on the prescription food, then changed to Wellness Core, but his sugars were not controlled with either. He is on Lantus. He was started at 1.5 units, twice a day. His numbers have consistently been in the 300-400 range. We slowly increased his insulin 1/2 unit at a time, until we were at 6 units twice a day. . .his readings were still in the 300s. I decided to finally give in and give him wet food (I've been avoiding it because of the expense and because he doesn't like wet food) He got wet food last night, and his normal dry food (Wellness Core) this morning. When I tested his blood sugar this afternoon, it was 54. I tested him right before feeding time, and it was 128. I decided not to give him his insulin tonight and to test him again in the morning (and then give him a lower dosage)

I'm not really sure where to go from here. Any suggestions?

Also. .. any suggestions on food? I am looking to start on Friskies or 9 Lives. .. I know they are not the highest quality food, but I have 4 cats and a small budget. I read that Friskies Pate is the best, as it is the lowest carb, but all of the pate I looked at tonight had rice listed as an ingredient. Aren't we trying to avoid rice? I settled on a few cats of the Friskies Tuna and Egg Flaked, because it had a high protein content and no rice. Can anyone give me guidance?

Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the board!

You just saw the impact of a switch to wet, I am so glad you are home testing! Many of us here feed fancy feast classic pâtés or friskies pâtés because they are cheaper and still low carbs. But here is a list of foods that are good. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=94685

We don't advise newbies shoot under 200, so it's important to get a test before every shot.

Now that he is on low carb though if he is over 200, we should revaluate your dose, What weight is he? That will help starting dose.

"The dose makes the poison"

Which means that amount of rice is negligible. If you check the food list from Cat Info, you will see that the percent of calories from carbohydrates is under 10% for the Friskies pates. I've 14 cats under my roof and we feed that, using the 13 oz cans.

I feed a lot of friskies (it's my cat's favorite)

Yes there is a trace of rice.... but what matters is whether your cat is carb sensitive. Mine isn't. I find she does better on the 8% than the low ones.
If the numbers don't spike hugely after eating it, then you should be safe feeding it.
