So we're still fairly new to having a diabetic cat, so I hope this question doesn't come off as naive.

Yesterday at the cat's checkup, the vet recommended some low-carb dry food as a supplement to help our cat curb his chewing habit. She suggested feeding him a few kernels throughout the day yesterday to see if he liked it. Thankfully he loved the food and it does seem to curb his chewing.

So today I get home from grocery shopping and go to feed the cat his dinner. I made the mix of food like the vet said and the cat seemed very uninterested, which was not like him at all. He is usually excited for dinnertime and practically eats the food as it comes out of the can. Tonight he barely took two bites and hopped down. I went to put the bag of dry food back and realized that a quarter of what was in the bag this morning was gone! My son had decided to feed the cat, won't tell me what time, and I gave the cat his insulin when I noticed he started eating the first few bites.

My question is, should I be worried about the cat? Will the insulin lower his blood sugar too much since he didn't eat his dinner but was eating throughout the day? I called the vet's emergency service, but no one has gotten back to me yet. :(

More than likely he will be fine but the only real way to know is test his blood sugar. What dry food are you feeding? And what insulin at what dose?

Could you ask him again and tell him it's kind of important as far as "when" he fed the dry?
Chances are good that the dry food would have pushed up the blood glucose a good bit, so even though he didn't eat dinner like you were hoping, it should be okay. But like Mel mentioned, knowing what type of insulin, and how much, would be helpful for us to know.

Are you home-testing the BG currently, and if not, has your vet mentioned that as an option?
