Hi everyone. I feel like things have finally settled down as we just moved going on 3 weeks ago and getting settled into a routine. My mom was over tonight and she helped me test Mae and it really wasn’t bad! I know it will take time to get confident but thankfully my girl is super chill.

could someone please help me out with setting up a spreadsheet? I’m going to update my signature with the meter I am using.

Mae has been on Purina DM dry which I now know is too high in carbs. This week I’ve slowlyyyyy started incorporating wet food in so she gets used to it and she seems to love it. I’ve been doing like half a can of the FF classic pate split between her morning and evening shots mixed in with the dry food. My plan is once I’m consistent with testing to increase the wet food and get her off the dry but I plan on taking it slow.

thanks!
Mandy

Hi @Mae’s Mama, I have sent you a PM with the details I need to set up the spreadsheet. Look for it in the Inbox at the top right corner of this page.

It's great that you are transitioning Mae from the DM dry to the wet. You need not restrict her to DM. There's nothing in prescription food that miraculously treats diabetes. Many of them are expensive, too high in carbs (especially the dry ones) and the ingredients tend to be of low quality. Any low carb (with carbohydrates less than 10%) canned food will do. Most of us feed our own cats Fancy Feast Classics, Friskies Pates or 9-Lives Ground because they get less than 10% of their calories from carbs. They are also easy to find and affordable.

Thank you so much for setting up the spreadsheet for me!

it’s pretty disheartening about the DM food not being good for them. It’s like $70 per bag which thankfully I can afford but I felt bad at the time for anyone that couldn’t because it seemed like the only option! I’ve learned a lot just from browsing this forum.

thanks again,
Mandy

I just tested her myself and it’s been approximately 2 hours since her dose (I didn’t test her this morning because I forgot to take food away last night and not sure if she ate anything before I got up). Anyway, I’m not sure if I got her vein by accident because the blood came out quick and good. I held a cotton pad to it and it stopped bleeding but could I have hurt her doing that? I saw on the testing resources to not aim for the vein.

That's alright. You still want to test her before the shot to ensure it is safe to give her the dose.

That happens sometime. It's okay. They have fewer nerve endings at the edge of the ear so using the edge of the ear to poke for blood doesn't hurt them.

Thank you for your replies, now I know I should still test her in the morning even if I forget to take the food away. Also that if I accidentally get her vein (I’m not sure if I did I just saw the blood came out quicker than the other time I did it) that it won’t do harm. I am so nervous to hurt her testing but as I read more I am realizing it’s much worse to keep shooting blind.
