I never saw any symptoms before a flare up, it would start with lack of appetite. Sometimes stress will set it off, like a vet visit. Is Oscar showing any symptoms?

He is presently in the hospital with pancreatitis. Did not eat for a day and a half. Gave him Cerenia and Gabapectin both days but did not help. Tried tuna, roasted chicken, baby food and sardines. Friend gave him fluids. Took him to the hospital this morning. Dehydrated and low temp and low blood glucose. Kidney bun elevated but not bad.
The emergency vet put in a line for the fluids and got his temp up to normal. No ketones in urine. No infection. Glucose still low. They did get him to eat and keep it down.
He was hospitalized for the same thing 4th of July for 3 days. Found a bunch of stuff they were watching and those things have gotten worse. I can’t even remember what she told me.
I don’t know if something triggered this flare or it’s just the progression of the disease.
So tight now the plan is to keep giving fluids and get the glucose up and then discuss options.
Meantime I just want to cry.

Sounds like he's in the right place to get treated. You might want to ask your vet for a prescription for ondansetron, I found it much better than Cerenia for nausea. Cerenia is good if there is vomiting.

He did vomit the first day . Yes I will ask for everything he needs. He is at SC Veteranary Speciality Clinic and Emergency Care here in Columbia SC, which has emergency and urgent care 24/7 and a big hospital. Right down the street from me. He sees the specialist there for his diabetes since I have no faith in my regular vet.
I'm so sorry. Pancreatitis is not uncommon in diabetic cats. The one thought I had is that gabapentin is a good drug for neuropathic pain. It may not be wonderful for pancreatitis. Ask the vet if they would consider buprenorphine for pain management even at home. Some vets are very reticent to prescribe it these days since it's a narcotic and a form of it is for human use. However, it's great for pain management in cats for pancreatitis, dental extractions, etc. This is especially the case since nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and not great for cats due to their potential effect on the kidneys.

He sees an internist who went on maternity leave yesterday but she will do a telephone consultation on Monday.
so his BG got up to 200. He is “excited” to eat. Potassium a little low. Will come home with sub fluids. Maybe tomorrow. Putting very loudly! Loved being brushed!

So I brought his Lantus pen to the hospital. Didn’t think to bring syringes. It’s a hospital for Pete’s sake! He was supposed to go home today. Called and she says you didn’t bring the tips for the pen so we gave him our insulin. Perhaps 8 units was too high. His BG is low . 50 …..50…….!!!!! I am beside myself! So now we are hesitant for him to leave….!!!!! Giving him food to see if it comes up…..BUT HE IS HAPPY AND PURRING. Like that is supposed to make me feel better.

Can you find out what type of insulin they gave and did they use pen tips or syringes? Just want to make sure it was the dose he was supposed to give. I also agree with Diane, we have no way of knowing if 8 units is a good dose, as there have been hardly any mid cycle tests or curves for quite a while.

Yes I will start again testing more. They said in the bill Glargine insulin inj 100U/ml (per unit) 0.08 and I only see that listed once. (He was extremely low most of the time)
so now he came home yesterday morning. Has a bag of fluids VetLyte, to be given every 2-3 days at 100 ml, potassium gluconate 550 mg tablet every 12 hours . His budesonide every evening, Cerenia 1/4 tablet as needed, gabepectin as needed.
How big are the Cerenia tablets? And how much does Oscar weigh? A quarter tablet seems quite a low dose, but depends on tablet size. Note, some vets under dose oral Cerenia which needs a larger dose than the injectible does.

The Cerenia pills are 16 mg. He was 7.1 the other day when dehydrated. I wanted her to weigh him when he was ready to come home but she didn’t.
we are going to test the electrolytes again on Wednesday morning to see if the potassium supplement is still okay. And sending some bloodwork out for a GI panel. On telecall this morning she said for all that he had going against him that he looks pretty good. (Well he is living the good life here)

Dosing of Cerenia is typically 1mg/lb. Good idea to check the potassium level, maybe get him weighed then too. I hope he's feeling better now.
Neko was quite easy going. I put a heat reflective pad down near a hot air vent, gave her some freeze dried chicken bits and she relaxed right into it. I did it in the bathroom with the door closed, hung the bag over the shower rod. But ECID.
