I have read a lot here and have read other places as well but I'm not getting the feeding thing.
My cats are no longer on the hard dry food that they've grazed on their whole lives. They have always eaten FF wet food twice day , a quarter can each twice a day.

The vet said they should have about 300 calories a day each so that comes out to a little over three can a day each....this sound like way to much food. Dasher the diabetic one weighed 16.5 lbs yesterday and his brother is about 17.5 so vet said both need to loose some weight.
Since taking away the dry food we've been feeding them a half can of FF four time daily for a total of 6oz of food and a little less than 200 calories. The cans are only 3oz a can. Is it bad to give three or four meals a day for Dasher? How much food should they be eating?

I am not sure how much Fancy Feast you need to feed, but I normally feed my cats Friskies 5.5 oz cans. I feed mine twice a day and they all get about 1/2 can + 1 spoonful for each meal. Most of mine are a normal weight, 9 - 11 lbs, except for Cracker. He is a very big boy at 20 lbs.

Mine all eat 4-5 times a day. It is much easier on a diabetic to eat several small meals a day. Now since I have 16 cats I don't feed Fancy Feast but do feed everyone Friskies Pate in the 5.5 oz cans and I have several LARGE guys here. Maxwell is 16 lbs and Cassanova is 17 lbs and that is a nice slim and trim healthy weight for them both. They each get between 1 1/2 to 2 cans a day or about 8.25 oz - 11 oz a day. Both are diabetic and in remission. So no 3 cans a day of Fancy Feast isn't out of line, especially while Dasher is still unregulated, he will need about 20% more food than he will once he is regulated because his body isn't processing his food right just yet. Once regulated he will go back to eating more normally.

That is roughly the volume difference between dry food and canned food.

You'll need to adjust your perception of too much and too little by the canned food volume, not the dry food volume.
