Hello everyone! It's been a while. I hope you are all doing well :) The good news is that Moose is still in remission. The bad news is that he has become a skeleton kitty :( He is 16 years old now.

At his heaviest he was 24 lbs, with a goal weight of 14 lbs per the vet. He has always been a bigger cat. He is now 7.7 lbs as of February, I am taking him back to the vet next week and I can only imagine he has lost more weight. 7.7 may not seem low but trust me when I say he is a skeleton, all skin and bones. The vet said he has 0 muscle mass.

I am struggling with his diet. I know that diabetes diet and CKD diet are conflicting. I spoke to my vet who agreed that keeping his diabetes in remission was more important than him eating a CKD diet since the CKD progresses slower.

He is currently eating Blue Buffalo Wilderness High Protein Chicken Recipe. It was the highest calorie content out of the low card/low phos foods on the food chart that I could find. The issue is 1. He's not gaining weight, despite eating half a can a day which is 275 calories. 2. The food contains small fragments of bone (I have found this to be the case with other high protein foods.) He cannot digest those pieces. He doesn't throw up immediately, but the next morning he will throw up bile with the bone fragments in it. This happens most mornings.

He's also ravenously hungry. As soon as he's done eating, he is crying/scouting for more food. He waits for crumbs to drop from the counter, and will get up on the counter to look for food several times a day which he never used to do. He'll also try to steal food from me.

I'm at a loss as to what to switch him to. I tried to switch him back to Weruva Chicken Frick-A-Zee which he used to eat all the time and did well on. Even with slowly switching him (small scoop a day in his existing food, and increasing slowly) he was having bloody diarrhea.

I want him to gain weight, satisfy his hunger, not throw up bile every morning, and not have diarrhea while keeping his diabetes and CKD in check. At his last vet visit, the vet did not find anything that would indicate why he is losing so much weight, or why he is ravenously hungry. She said that often cats with CKD lose their appetite so she was rather perplexed.

Is that the 12.5 Oz size you are feeding him half of? So 6.25 ounces a day? Add water to it so he has more in his tummy. Don't limit how much he eats if he's underweight. I mean obviously do t give him so much that he eats too fast and pukes, but if he wants more, give it to him! Are you leaving food out for him overnight? That will help with the bile in the morning thing.

Diabetic CKD Foods (Low Carbs, Low-moderate Phosphorus) Updated, May 23, 2021

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sli95TBIzdhbskuAMSGVePqi0-4bWisR/view

The most awesome list that is kept up to date .... for low carb/low-moderate phosphorus foods. The page for the Diabetic CKD Foods is on page, 11, so scroll down to find all the date in Metabolized Energy format. A lot of the Weruva BFF PLAY foods are low phosphorus ME. You aren't going to find any commercially available foods lower than that unless you go to a prescription renal diet (which are higher in carbs anyway).

Also if you go to @PerfumedCatMom spreadsheet at the top of it ,it says Weruva , tap on it ,she has listed a lot of the Weruva foods

I hope Moose gets better :bighug:

Thanks Katherine

One other thought -- Ask your vet if a phosphorus binder would be helpful.. The phos binder will allow you to feed your cat anything your want and anything Moose likes. As long as you add the binder every time you feed Moose, the phos will not have an effect on his kidneys.

If you've not already been directed to Tanya's site, it's an incredible resource for cats and their caregivers for CKD.

A lot of the Weruva foods are great for diabetic and CKD kitties, but not good for weight gain as they tend to be lower in calories than other foods. Sienne's suggestion of adding a phosphorus binder is a very good one for Moose's case. Have you thought of doing a homemade raw diet for him? You can get boneless ground meats and add a meal completer to it like EZ Complete or Alnutrin (have to add raw liver to Alnutrin). Lots of raw meats sold for pets have higher fat content that would help with weight gain. You can get meats from a raw food purveyor like Hare Today that is located in PA, and they list all of the nutritional values of their meats so you can see protein and fat content before you buy.

Correct, 6.25. & I do already add water to his food, as much as I can without making it soupy. I don't want to limit how much he eats, but if he eats more than that (even a little more, and spread out) he still gets terrible diarrhea.

I'm not sure how to leave food for him overnight, as we have another cat. I know there are feeders that will only open with a specific collar, but I'm not sure how that was prevent Charlie (the other cat) from eating right over him if that makes sense.

I have looked into it, but was fearful of getting the proportions wrong even with the guide. I don't want him to be lacking in any nutrients but right now I'm pretty desperate and want to make sure he has good quality of life. I will definitely look into this thank you!

Adding plain chicken into his diet in addition to the cans is a good low carb source of protien. My ckd cat goes crazy for roasted chicken.

I have 5 cats.... All of whom are grazers. I feed them In the morning, lunch, dinner, and before bed. I leave out enough that there's always leftovers by morning.
