My cat was DX 1 month ago with diabetes (very High) .... he was eating Royal Canin Satiety for his weight.
Cosmo is 28 lbs (maine coon) was originally 37 lbs 1 1/2 yrs ago. He started with (protomine) 5 units 2x day and after 7
days his sugar was still very high, so the vet suggested going to 6 units a week ago... that did the trick, his legs were
no longer weak, and he was no longer peeing on the floor. Yesterday i was able to test his urine (accident on floor)
and he was negative on sugar and ketones. The vet wants his urine monitored for the next 3 days closely, as
he may no longer be diabetic....Please note I switched his food to Young again , no carbs 3 days ago.
My big problem is I am lving for vacation on Sat, have a pet siter that was going to give him his shots 2x aday
but now I'm not sure if he is still a diabetic anymore! If he is administered his insulin and is no longer
a diabetic it will most likely kill him!!! Is it ok to stop his insulin for a week?? HELP PLEASE!!!

Urine testing with a non-detect value means the glucose is below the renal threshold of about 240 mg/dL since the previous void. This is not quite the same thing as having a normal glucose level. Normal glucose levels are from about 50-120 mg/dL.

How much insulin did you give most recently? If you were up to 6 units, a dose reduction may be appropriate, but not just stopping.

PS - this forum doesn't get a lot of posts; I suggest posting in Feline Health.

He is currently on 6 units 2 x a day. There are no signs of overdose..ie staggering, lethargic, etc... just the opposite.
He is very alert and running around. This a.m. I took it upon myself to lower his dosage to 5 units. I am just concerned
as I will not be there to watch him for 7 days to see if there is a problem, the petsitter will ony be there 2 x a day for 15 minutes. If I board him @ the vets, he will be VERY stressed!!!!

Check my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools.

Have your pet sitter do those assessmentswhich are possible in a standard visit.

Measure how much water was drunk out of amount put down and log it.
Measure food left out of amount put down and log it.
Get daily weight if a scale is available and log it.
Urine test if he goes to pee while sitter is there.
Smell breath - if it smells fruity or like nail polish remover, take to vet (ketones).
Check skin for dehydration
- gently pull up scruff and release - snap back down is likely not dehydrated. If stays tented up, take to vet.
- press gums for a moment and release - if gums stay white for prolonged period, dehydration.
Check eyes for yellowing of the whites and skin for yellowing (jaundice); if present, take to vet.

Notify vet of who pet sitter is and provide authorization to treat up to a particular amount, plus your contact info while on vacation.

Often what we do on vacations is slightly reduce the dose, as sometimes the cat may not eat due to stress, so you might do 4.5 units.

Searched the board for "vacation" and came up with these posts.

ok THANKS... eating for him is not a problem. As long as he is in his own house he is not stressed, and actually
liks the petsitter. But if he is not longer diabetic, wont the the insulin kill him??????

Lack of glucose in urine while giving insulin does not equal remission.

You said you are giving 5+ units of insulin. You don't go from 5 units to 0. You may have decent control if there is no glucose in the urine, but without blood tests, you really have no idea how low he is going.

And he will always be a diabetic, with or without insulin, because all it takes is an infection, or feeding high carb food, and he'll be needing insulin again in short order.
