help please. wont eat, low sugar

fish wont eat, hes at 311, which is low for him. hes stumbly and aloof, i dont know if i give him his shot or wait. i tried to sit with him and feed him but he just wouldnt. the vet we go to isnt open for 2 hours so i cant call them and am really scared and dont know what to do. im updating his chart completely after i post this for anyone who notices.
 
better to skip or give a token (very small) dose if you're not comfortable and he is acting strange. 311 isn't dangerously low but you hold the syringe. And it is important to eat with the insulin dose.

Do you test for ketones at all?

i’ve got him to eat treats, tried to give him his other food and he’s only licked up the broth before loosing interest. called the emergency vet and they basically said no one’s in right now
 
he threw up around 10 this morning, still uninterested in food completely. his blood sugar is at 276 right now. he wobbles completely side to side when he walks so i’ve decided to give him a little bit of syrup and see if it helps at all, seeing as he’s never been this low.

I don’t think the issues you are seeing are due to blood sugar levels, but rather than speculating, I will just say that when kitties stop eating, are vomiting, and are not acting as they usually do, it’s really best to take them in for a vet to check them out. There could be one or a number of things going on, which a vet really is better set up to diagnose with proper examination, and they can intervene appropriately. Please get him in as soon as you can.

threw up again and finally started eating
 
Maybe it works differently where I am, but emergency here will take you in immediately and you just need to explain the issues and concerns, they would triage on the spot and likely have your cat looked at. I wouldn’t be waiting for an appointment, I really hope that’s not what your emergency vets do.
 
Oh hon, I’m sorry :bighug:. Okay well try and keep giving small amounts of food if you can, but not too much at a time, you don’t want him vomiting again. Is he drinking any water? He can quickly get dehydrated if he is vomiting repeatedly, can you pull up his scruff and see if it snaps back immediately? Or check his gums, they should be shiny and slick, if they are sticky, he’s likely dehydrated, which can make him feel poorly. Has he used the litter box, peeing or pooping ok?
 
You should be able to pick up urine test strips at any pharmacy for people.

How much has he eaten now compared to his daily amount of food?

For later, not now, I notice you've shot 228 before, so 311 shouldn't be a problem.
 
last update i think, fish is ketotic, they’re giving him antibiotics and we have some time left with him. thank you for your help and i’m so sorry
 
I know this is very stressful, I would hope the vet also started some IV fluids to help flush out the ketones? The fluids can also help to rebalance any electrolytes that are out of whack :bighug:
 
Did the vet say ketones (very treatable) or DKA/diabetic ketoacidosis. DKA is treatable but more intensive.

"diabetic ketosis, likely acidosis." they told us to treat it, it’d be around 68k for the inpatient and hoe long hed need tk be there, based on their history with it
 
i have the estimate they gave us, i don’t know what else to say. there’s not other hospitals that’s be able to properly treat him near me, the closest is teo hours, and it’s still money we do not have. i’m grieving actively, they think its his pancreas that caused it, i would to anything to possibly help him if i could, there’s just nothing within reach
 
$68,000 is not what treatment should cost. Gabby was treated a long time ago and was hospitalized for 3 - 4 days if I remember correctly. I think the bill was around $3,000.
 
Oh wow. I don’t see how that estimate could be right. I would definitely question it and go over the line items in the estimate to see what all the costs are.

I recall that by the time my cat had spent 7 or so days in the Emergency Vet hospital and the regular vet (back and forth) that I spent about $7,000 to 8,000 or so. That was in 2020. That was when I got the Care Credit card to pay for all of it as the Emergency Vet requires payment before they treat. I see a lot of cats here who don’t have to stay in the hospital as long as Darcy did though. He had an infection and a very high fever when I took him in. It took about 4 days of intensive care before it looked like he was going to make it.
 
I'm new to kitty diabetes and can't give advice on that. But I do dog rescue and there can be a huge difference of cost between ER vets. Maybe ck on cost with another one, or see if there's any local vets who can do urgent care. I'm so sorry.

:eek::eek: Ask the vet for an itemized estimate to see what procedures and tests the vet plans to do. No ER vet will charge $68,000 for a visit and treatment, even if the pet is admitted for a few days. Are you in the US?

Have you spoken with your regular vet since and discussed your cat's condition?
 
so apparently i misshesrd the vet on pricing, but it’s still more than we’d ever have, we can’t ask anyone for help because there’s been so many emergencies around us lately, i feel so sick i don’t know what to do, it’s not unobtainable anymore, there’s still so little i can do

she told us the take dka they treated never got better, that ketosis was likly brought on by his pancreas, its so sick that this is left up to me, id do anything for him, i just dont want him to be hurting
 
I'm so sorry. As I've worked in dog rescue a few things that have helped with vet care: vet schools, The Mosby Foundation, Care Credit, and some rescues.

We have cats on this forum - many cats- who have recovered from DKA. Mine did. Some have recovered from DKA more than one time.
 
looking into financial aid and probability for fish,thank you again for help, its been a really hard and stressful couple of days, it means the world to me and him

none of the programs listed here are able to help us currently, ive made a gofundme(that i wont share here because i do not know the rules about it), thank you again
