? Help please - Freckles vomited before evening shot. Do I hold the shot?

Hi All,

Freckles is 30 minutes past her evening insulin shot as she vomited her supper. Her eyes are glazed and I'm thinking she has a sore tummy. She's usually a voracious eater and she gulped down her supper as usual then vomited. I may have added too much water to her food. Should I hold the shot to be sure she can keep down her food tonight?

Thanks in advance

That's good. If she seems okay after the cheese, I'd try more of her normal food. If she eats that, you are probably okay to shoot the normal dose.

Ok. If she eats her normal food, should I wait a bit to make sure she doesn't vomit that? Right now I'm about 30 min late in giving her insulin.

If you shoot late tonight, tomorrow morning's shot should be 12 hours from the actual time you shoot. Then you can safely work your way back by one 30 min. increment per day or two 15 min. increments per day.
I can shoot at 11 hours 30 minutes tomorrow morning. I have to leave for work so I can't shoot later.

I think skipping is the safe thing to do since she doesn't want to eat now. I hope her tummy settles down. Do you have any meat only baby food? Sometimes a cat will eat that when they won't eat anything else.

Darn it... no I don't have any meat baby food and I live an hour from the city so I will pick some up tomorrow to have on hand. I will try her food a little bit later and see if her appetite turns around. Thanks for your help and guidance Carla. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out with this!! :bighug:

You're welcome. Hopefully she'll get over whatever is bothering her soon. Below are some suggestions for getting a cat to eat that we give to people. But if her stomach is upset, they may not work. You can keep them for future reference.

Do you have any parmesan cheese? If you maybe sprinkle a little of that on her food, she will perhaps eat? usually ondansetron is better for nausea than cerenia but it doesn't hurt to give her the cerenia....it can help.

Can you finger feed her....either see if she will lick food off your finger or will she let you dab some on the front of her tongue or on the roof of her mouth? Just be careful that it's only a small amount and that you don't get it down her throat.

Here's some info Jill often posts when a kitty won't eat:Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
- forta flora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
- parm. cheese
- smashed crumbles of dry food
- Purebites Duck Liver -- crushed and put on as a topper.
- bonito tuna flakes
- halo chicken treats -- crumble into dust over food
- poor a little water from tuna in water over food ( I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats-- check labels)
-powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
- trader joe tuna for cats
-baby food -- beechnut turkey and broth or chicken and broth. they have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
- kentucky fried chicken
- deli turkey /chicken
- plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
-canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
- chicken broth -- low sodium

Hi Judy :bighug: Sorry to hear Freckles is not feeling well but Carla is the best to have in your corner ...I trust her totally :bighug: Do you have any Slippery Elm Bark ( SEB)? That's what I use when mine have upset stomachs . It is fantastic . Sending prayers for Freckles to feel better snd for your heart to be at peace ❤️

Yup!! Parmesan cheese worked! She's eating her food, so will give her very little servings but often tonight and monitor. Thanks Carla, Beth and Jill! :bighug: You guys rock!!

Please test for ketones tonight. You are almost always safe to give at least half a dose. Cats undergoing anesthesia who cannot eat can get half a dose. Insulin does more than combat carbs in food.

If a cat is scarf and barfing, give it well watered down, or you can get bowls that slow them down.

Thanks Wendy. If I give half a dose of insulin tonight do I give her regular dose at her regular time in the morning? I will test for ketones tonight.

It depends on whether you are shooting on time. Is her shot late?

Also, keep in mind that, because of the depot, you could still see the same cycle as you would with a full dose. Test as you normally would until the BG starts to get a good rise.

Hi Marje. Her half dose tonight is 2 hours later than normal.

Hi

Hi Marje. Her half dose tonight is 2 hours later than normal.

Ok. Here’s a post on how to get back on schedule.

Tonight was extenuating because she threw up but normally if we have to stall, we shoot the full dose. Again, tonight was different but keep it in mind if you ever have to stall in the future due to low numbers.

Ok. Thanks Marje. Great information to have and that post is now in my bookmarks. Thanks again!

Thanks Wendy. No urine sample last night, but I got one this morning @ 6:45 am and was negative for ketones. I had been mixing water in with Freckles' food. Is it possible that I was giving too much water? I've been mixing 1/2 food and 1/2 water. Is that too much?

That is more water than I gave, but Neko was good at drinking her own water. You can cut down a little and see if it cuts the barfing. Or maybe you just need the special bowls. Here is just one example of a slow feeder bowl.

Ok. Ii will try less. Last night was the first time since Dx for vomiting. I'm using the Petsafe auto feeder so the "bowls" are pie shape. I think I can probably rig something up to put in the bowls to slow Freckles down. I use the slow feeder bowls for our dogs and they do help! Thanks. Freckles is back to her normal self today and appetite is good. Thanks for your help. Everyone is so helpful on this forum! :bighug:

Harry one of my civvies will barf and scarf if I put too much water in the food and he also eats too fast. So I now feed him on a much larger plate. That slows him down and he hardly ever vomits now.
