Hi all,

I noticed a small brown spot on my cat's iris. I've made a vet appt. for this Thursday.

Does anyone know if this always mean cancer? If so would removing the eye save the cat?

If anyone has knowledge on this I'd really appreciate hearing from you. I love this guy so much.

Thanks,
Denise

I don't have a clue but hope you have a vet that specializes in eyes close by, that would be the way to go if your vet isn't really sure. You may need a referral from your primary vet.
Good luck and I hope it isn't anything bad.

Thanks - I just did a lot of googling, and luckily a spot isn't always indicative of cancer. We'll have to see.

Would still like to hear from anyone with experience in this matter though.

It is possible to have a mole over the iris (I have one called a Nevus of Ota and it looks like one eye is black).

Think about the skin cancer ABCDEs used for humans. Some of these may be similar in cats.
Asymmetry
Border irregularities
Color changes
Diameter greater than the end of a pencil
Evolving or changing in size.

When did you notice this first?

I just noticed it Friday - called for an appt. today. From what I read it could be a melanoma or "a something else" that could be a precursor to glaucoma. Hopefully if it is melanoma we will have caught it soon enough that eye removal will save his life (no spread of the cancer). I hate not knowing - it's going to be hard waiting til Thursday.

Or it could just be a mole, which technically is a form of benign tumor.

Yes, that would be awesome!
I just feel like I need to prepare myself for the worst. But hopefully, from what I read today, that would be him losing an eye - not his life.

Hello,

Wishing your kitty all the best!
BJM is correct, my Oreo has a mole on his iris and the vet just said to monitor it. He has had it for at least 8 years. I even asked my ophthalmologist when I got my eyes checked and they said the same thing even though it was a cat question.

Great news!! The vet thinks it's just a pigment change, and nothing to worry about - but we will keep an eye on it. She said it's flat - which is not indicative of a tumor. SO relieved! Thank you all so much for your input. I was pretty much certain we were looking at something really bad until reading your responses.

Again - Thank You!!
Denise
