Amber, my world, my life, my everything.

Amber has been diabetic now for a year and a half and my vet said her diabetes was not in control. All I have ever done is follow their advice.

Her readings are all over the place - up / down - high/Low. She’s on 2.5units twice a day

I feed her twice a day one pouch morning and one pouch in the evening and nothing in between as recommended. Is this enough food? Sometimes I give her a few biscuits before bed time. She eats Purina senior.


I do her BGs at home and as mentioned they are all over the place. When I send to the vets all they Say is increase or decrease the insulin by 25%.

I do absolutely everything I can, she is completely happy in herself - she does drink a little more than usual though but nothing ridiculous.

Any help would be appreciated im at a loss and don’t know what to do. She’s my world.

She was on canusulin but now PZI. She had a hypo a few months back, but is all back to normal.

I just want to help her, but I don’t know anymore. She is such a good girl but my vets say this is all normal. I feel I’m doing something wrong, I’ll never ever give up but I think I do need some help ☹️
 
YOir SS has not been u[date since Apr 2022 and then only a few entries. W/o data I can't say much except some info I posted in your post on food. That info is What can make a difference is where you inject since absorption can different in different locations, including same location but on different side of the body. Also needle length can affect absorption
 
As Larry said, your Ss is not up to date. It also looks as if you only tested every few weeks. to be able to help you, we need to see some recent data please:)
I would also feed more than twice a day.
 
I'm also wondering how high in carbohydrates Amber's food is.

If you can add some recent data to Amber's spreadsheet it would help us to get a better sense of what's going on and offer informed suggestions.

Hello, i have now updated the SS. PZI Started on 24/12/2022 - we are currently injecting 2.5 units twice daily. on 05/09/2022 Amber had a hypo. We both spent 2 days together at the vets whilst they had an IV with glucose she wasn't allowed home until she maintained her levels. we did this for 2 days. Our vets gave us two options referral to another vets or put her to sleep. Obviously the only option we would do is the referral. Referred to this new vets who suggested to change her food to Purina HA. She was ok on this for a month or so then wouldn't eat it. so we have gone back to Purina Senior Wet with a few dry biscuits. Her weight is 4.3. She had a Fructosamine on 07/09/2022 : 448 = Fair Control.
 
I note that your new data only shows up on the World sheet (not in US sheet). Also, you only have 4 days of entries for 2023. To me there is not enough data to show what is going on.
From the limited amount of dat for 2023 which is all on PZI i think that 2.5 unit may be too high.
When did you change food back to to Purina Senior Wet with a few dry biscuits? Since that can affect overall BG. I would put that in the remarks on the SS.

For some reason the world SS is not transferring to the US SS. You can see some data on the world SS. Not a lot unfortunately but I think the dose is too high. Would like your opinion please.
Hayley needs to be doing a lot more consistent testing of the BGs.
Im tagging @Bandit's Mom to have a look at the SS and see if she can fix the problem
 
Looking at the world sheet there are still very few tests. I don't understanding the dose increase from 2 to 2.5 when the kitty went into Lime green territory on only 2 units. I would reduce the dose right away, yes. And more testing every day needs to be done so that we can see what is happening. I don't see any recent tests at all from February -- except one black from the 26th. Looks like Amber is dropping low and bouncing a lot -- from the scattered tests that are there.

I know others have said this, but you need to feed more small meals throughout the early part of the cycle - at least up to +6. Please do this. It will help to smooth out the cycle and can also help prevent her from dropping low. We can talk about all of this stuff and I would love to help you, but I need more testing data. If the spreadsheet (US format) isn't working yet, that's fine. I can deal with the world one until it gets fixed.
 
Also, I would like to know what she is eating specifically. A low carb wet food diet is what is best for diabetics. I would like to see her eating food that is at least less than 10 percent carbs. Do you know how many carbs are in the purina you are feeding her? But all food changes that go from higher carb to lower carbs need to be made gradually because the blood glucose levels really will come down and we cannot put Amber in danger.

I would like to see you reduce her dose down to 1.75 units and to gather as much testing data as possible. I say this because she had a lime green number of 52 (2.9) on January 2. That number on an Alpha Trak meter is way below where we want them to be. In fact, your "take action" number for the Alpha Trak meter is 68 (3.7). That means you should give her high carb food and test again every 20-30 minutes until she's back up again into a safer number. She's already had one hypo that requires hospitalization and I know you don't want that to happen again. The way to keep her safe is to reduce the dose, get regular BG tests for her charted on your spreadsheet. Hold the dose for at least 7 days (14 cycles) unless she drops too low and we would reduce the dose again. I do expect that she will go high on you at times because she is bouncy (she drops low and then goes high again as a result,) but we need to see what her nadir is (the lowest point in the cycle) in order to make sure she won't drop too low at nadir and be in danger. And please keep the spreadsheet updated daily and check in here. If you post on the ProZinc forum, I will see it. But you can also keep posting here if you wish and I will try to remember to check it. There's so much going on here. I always get notification in my email when people post on the ProZinc forum. If you have a hypo, post on this forum (feline health) with a 911 in your thread title). I look forward to hearing more about Amber. She's a beautiful cat. There are lots of really great people here that want to help.
 
On Feb 1st, she went to 2.9 (52), which is way too low for a reading on the AT. Her dose should have been reduced to 1.75 units after that curve. On Feb 13, she saw a 4 (73), which also meant her dose is too high.
 
Hi and welcome to the group! You can take the advice from Suzanne, Wendy, Bron and others to the frickin' bank, let me tell you. I went through this nightmare with my 10-year-old cat and with a lot of dedication, home testing, dietary adjustments and most of all -- following the guidance of the experts here -- my boy is now in diabetic remission. It can happen. And even if not remission, getting a kitty well-regulated is fantastic and they can lead a long healthy life that way.

your kitty is adorable, by the way! such a bright intelligent look in her eye :)
