Hey guys, so there is a really bad storm here and I lost power. It’s been out for about an hour and the fridge is starting to warm up. Not too bad yet and for now, I think it’s fine. Everything is still cold. But just thinking ahead. ComEd doesn’t even have an expected time for when the power will be back on.

What do I do to keep the Lantus from going bad? 3 weeks ago I paid $300 for this tiny vial. I was thinking a bowl of ice and putting the insulin box in there. But I don’t want it to get too cold either. So then I decided that was a bad idea. But I’m really not sure what to do.

help please!

That's crazy $300.00

Next time you need Lantus, most of us buy from Canada Marks Marine
5 lantus pens that will last almost a year . We still use syringes to draw the lantus from the pen, reason why with the pen you can only adjust by whole units
That's crazy $300.00, yes it is expensive in the US

A lot of us are buying our Lantus from Canada because it's 1/3 to 1/2 the price. You can get 5 pens of Lantus for $190 (including shipping). That's a total of 1500 units which is enough for most cats to last a year and some cats, up to 2 years!

Here's the info on Mark's Marine Pharmacy. They really are fantastic to work with and have saved a lot of kitty lives by making it affordable

It can take 7-10 days for the first order but refills are faster

You could also consider getting Semglee, it is a generic Lantus, and was approved by the FDA last June. The cost is compatible with Lantus from Canada.

Semglee is a glargine insulin that was just approved by FDA as being interchangeable with Lantus.

The cost is about the same as Lantus from Canada.

You can call some pharmacy's to see if they have semglee, a little bit cheaper than buying from Canada

Insulin can be stored at room temperature for up to 28 days. Storing it at room temperature an extended period of time will shorten the life of the insulin, but (as long as it stays below 80 degrees) being unrefrigerated even for a couple of days shouldn’t hurt it at all.

Thank you for the helpful info! I will bookmark these sites for purchasing my first refill.

My spreadsheet is updated. I only needed to add a few numbers. Testing is still a major problem. I used the burrito method today so I was able to get the reading but he refuses to keep his head still. I hit the vein again because he jerked his head to bite me as I was aiming. I feel so bad.

Honestly, it’s not getting any easier. He bites and growls at me the entire time like I’m torturing (before I’ve even done anything). He’s also growling and snapping during normal interactions now and I’m completely heartbroken by it.

He won’t eat any treats or food after because he’s so upset. So now the biggest problem for me is AMPS and PMPS. I’ve had to break the rules. The only way I’m able to give insulin is this: I put down food and he eats. Then I test him right away hoping it’s too soon for the food to have had any influence. Then I give insulin. Like I said, he refuses to eat after ear pokes. So I don’t know what else to do. I can’t inject when he won’t eat. Hopefully my numbers are still accurate?? I figure it’s still better than nothing.

I’m worried this is going to be a problem soon. He’s starting to associate food with a BG test to follow. So he’s not eating right away and my time keeps getting pushed later and later. I’m making it work but he’s behaving the opposite of how everyone says. He gets so mad after testing, I can’t even get him to eat his absolute favorite high carb food (just used it as a test—I only feed LC food now).

Food and treats are supposed to be associated with testing. But as a reward/something positive. It doesn’t work for me and I don’t know what to do about it… Any ideas? I’ve tried giving a ridiculous amount of praise after. I’m always so nice and talk in my sweetest voice no matter how much he hurts me. I’ve tried brushing him after and telling him he was a good boy. He wants nothing to do with me or any of it. We used to be best friends… but not anymore (I’m literally crying about this all the time). He used to be my shadow and now I have to search for him constantly to make sure he’s doing ok. I want my sweet boy back! What can I do? I’ll literally try anything at this point

Has anyone suggested trying the freestyle libre? It's kind of pricey but eliminates the need for drawing blood for a test. A couple people here use it, I can tag them if you're interested
