Hello everyone! Boy, was I happy to find this community and am looking forward to getting involved.

On to my plea for help...

My 12 year old kitty just got diagnosed with diabetes last week. We have prepared to start giving him insulin twice a day, every day as per vet’s orders after testing his levels every day with Ketodiastix.

I’m okay administering the shot when the time comes and not a squeamish person, but I have had trouble so far getting a urine sample to test! I have one other cat who is not diabetic, and I am looking for suggestions on what to do if I realistically have to do this twice every day.

Kit4kat kits would be far too expensive for me to use this often, and I am not sure how he would react to plastic wrap and/or using a ladle to catch the pee.

Anyone in a similar boat have any tips for me and Max? Thank you so much!

Urine testing is better than nothing, but it's sure not the best way to treat! Everybody here home tests their cat's blood glucose using a regular glucometer available at any pharmacy so we can see how well our cats are responding (and keep them safe!!!)

Urine testing for glucose only tells you that your cat is running too high and is over renal threshold (the point where the kidneys can't handle the extra glucose and "dumps" it into the urine). It can't tell you if your cat is running dangerously low and hypo's can kill quickly.

If you live in the US, you can get a Relion meter from WalMart….the strips for it are only $9/50 so it's affordable.

Thank you all for your help! I'm going to look into a Relion meter right now. I am just going off one vet visit and a quick phone call and tons of online research before we really dive deep into this journey. This helps me so much!

I decided to try testing his blood glucose and I need tips about which meter and strips to use. I will look for reliance. Also what lancets should I use?

Is really good that you decided to test his blood glucose, it will make regulating him much easier and it can literally save his life,

At the beginning is better to use not so thin lancets a 26 or 28 lancet is fine so that is easier to get a drop, after a while and when his ears form more capillaries you can use a thinner one, most of the people use the lancets free hand without the lancet device in my case Babu hated the click sound it makes and I think is easier to see where I'm aiming free hand but there are people who have been able to use the device I guess is a matter of trying and see what work best for you
