help! new and need to know if food will hurt him ⚠

Ok,
Ive posted a couple of times but I started treating Mister on 3/14/2015 and I have a spreadsheet.

he was on Friskies special diet "Turkey &Giblets , and "Beef & Chicken" for 2 yrs.I was regulating him through that diet feeding every 4 hrs. 3 tbs wet food and running him.

He seems to not do well on foods that are high in phosphorous so this is even more complicated because when he got sicker and we started insulin on the 14th he decided he will not eat those foods or any other Pate.

He is eating Friskies Shreds... "Beef in Gravy- 43 protein 42 fat 15 calories and 297 phos
Turkey cheese in Gravy- 44 protein 42 fat 14 carbs 299 phos
chicken in Gravy- 44 protein 42 fat 14 carbs 324 phos
prime filets
Turkey Dinner in Gravy- 52 protein 34 fat 14 carbs 318 phos

1 5.5oz can at 8a with 1.5 prozinc
1/2 can at 2p
1 5.5oz at 8p with 1.5 prozinc
1/2 can at 2am

he is drinking plenty, playing, purring, and fur is softer than its been in yrs,
but the litter box is still a river and his numbers dont really seem to be changing.
If i hold food out to the 8,9 hr mark he vomits bile

any advice? If I try any other foods he just ignores and sleeps
He is only 13 lbs. And will be 12yrs this aug.
also he has Fluts, and mega colon, but the mega colon hasnt been a problem since the diabetes diagnosis

Hello.
Often when they get sick on a food, they won't eat it again.... it becomes a bad association.

How was his megacolon diagnosed? ultrasound?

his symptoms sound a lot like ibd with the diarrhea and vomiting....
it could be that with his new foods, he has developed a sensitivity to some of the additives that they use to make gravy....
many formulas have changed ( and carageegan is showing up everywhere)
I seem to have that problem too as I had added the same foods as you and my cat has runny stools in reaction to them.

I don't know what fluts is.

If you could set an alarm and get some pm tests, I would say to increase by 0.25u ....
depending on your shot time.... I would hope you could at least get a before bed test....
the +2 test can indicate it's going to be an active cycle if it drops significantly from the preshot test.


I also see a footnote that Mister snuck some dry food..... could he be doing it more often than you think?

Mister hasn't ever had the runs he just goes normal now.
my only problem is he only likes those high carb gravy s.

besides his bgs staying up he is doing great.
F.L.U.Ts is when cats get crystals from high ash/ magnesium phosphorous foods.. the higher the acidity is the more likely they develop a blockage in the urethra.

As for the dry food I know when this happens because all four cats eat in seperate rooms locked behind doors. Its only when someone opens a door and looks away for a second that he gets caught trying to be sneaky, but he is always caught LoL!
I dont think mega colon is a problem anymore...when he was diagnosed it was through xrays and he was on Lactulose from 2008 till diabetes diagnosis in 2013
for all I know the med could've caused the diabetes.
He was 20 lbs before the diabetes and switch to all wet foods. Now he is 13lbs.
I think he is just sick of Pate flavors and is thinking...If im getting poked daily
it will be for something I want
 
Try Fancy Feast classics and the kitten cans that's what was recommend for diabetics like them no dry
 
Of course he likes the gravy foods, it's high carbs, what's not to like. The problem with that is you will have a very difficult time regulating his diabetes.

Have you seen Dr. Lisa's food comparison chart that lists carbs and phosphorus for you. While the Friskies SD is the most common low carb/low phos food, there are others on the list that you may want to try.

Feline lower urinary tract disease will do best on a canned or raw diet due to the moisture content. You can add about 1 ounce of plain meat or poultry to every 5 ounces of food to give it texture plus a protein boost. After adding, portion out what you normally would feed.

I tried fancy feast classic s and he actually loved it but its high in phosphorous so he ended up laying in his litter box for hrs and constantly licked himself down there and than his bgs went up.
so Im sure his kidney function hates fancy feast :(

So do you just boil chicken and shred it?
 
Some of the regular Friskies pate flavors, while not as low in phos as the SD are still fairly low (low enough that our CKD kitty can have them at least some of the time). I buy the Chicken and Liver, Country Style Dinner and the Whitefish & Tuna varieties (all under 1.5% phos as dry matter). The mixed grill is also low in phos and I do allow it just once in a while, although at 11% carbs it's not the best one for a diabetic (far from terrible, just not as good as it could be). If he's got hooked on gravy, the way I got around that was by mixing a lot of water into the pate so it pretty much turns into a soupy, gravy kind of texture. All the cats here (even the 2 that our housemate owns who I am assured refuse to eat wet food) love it.
 
Hi, Though I have two 18 year old cats Muffy (what a tomboy thumping around the house)
& Daisy (walks like a delicate princess lol), I noticed some very good diabetic cat information
on Tanya's CDF site on http://www.felinecrf.org/diabetes.htm
and decided to make a commercial canned cat food list of 1% to 2% carbs.
Then researched it to make sure they had no Carrageenan.
This is the first Diabetic cat site I put this list on.
It took me 2 months detailed research in my spare time.
It's the newest info I could find from Sept 2014 but mainly March 2015.

I narrowed it down to cat foods with 1% to 2%
and NO CARRAGEENAN!
(Also as SOME Diabetic cats have or may have in the future,
renal disease (CKD Chronic Kidney Disease) the phosphorus
levels are VERY low in the 0.60 to 1.5 range
(100mg to 200mg Phosphorus/100kcals)

I've been combing over these pages again myself as my cat, who was eating the same two Friskies special diet versions as your cat, staged a canned food strike because of the repetition. My cat also can't have fish (BG spiking) so I spent quite a bit of time today in the canned cat food aisle reading can labels, but he did eat the new food I brought home (hooray!).

So what did you end up buying?
My cat will not eat the food with added water..he will drink the water and leave the little pieces of meat behind like its to much work to grab it.
he seems to like the big chunks of meat now the come in the gravy shred or filets.
Were now at 2 units twice a day and still hitting 450 bg preshot.
i havent been able to fill in the sheet on here because there is a new baby in the house but i will do it.

Doses are adjusted based on the nadir, the lowest glucose level post-shot. Based on the mid-cycle tests you have gotten, you are safe to increase by 0.5 units to a total of 2 units per shot.
