We got the lantus!! So excited and scared too (new insulin, new protocols, etc). Will be studying up on the stickeys in the next hour or so because Ozzy's dose is due here soon.

So my vet was really awesome. I didn't get to talk with him when I came in to pick up the script and the syringes, but the vet tech said the Dr. has never prescribed lantus and wanted to learn about it together. He was not sure how you administer it with the pen

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

When you pull the cap off the pen there is a purple stopper. You use an insulin U 100 syringe and pull it out like you do from a vial. BUT DO NOT INJECT AIR INTO PEN.

Your vet sounds cool on all this. My vet learned about Lantus from me. I sent him the link to my spreadsheet and emailed him a copy of it, cuz he isn't to pc savvy. Took him forever to learn how to print it out in color. Hehehe

@Taffysmama Hallelujah!! I am going to call my local CVS pharmacy right now and check with them. In case mine doesn't, what CVS do you go to? I'll drive to OC to pick it up if need be. Thanks!
My cat Sketch was just diagnosed last week and I was checking around today for single of the Lantus. Thats great that your CVS will break a set. Mine up here in Ashland/Medford Oregon won't do it. Also tried Walgreens and Rite Aid up here..no luck. Had to order off vetrxdirect. I think in the future I'll try to put together a list of local pet owners that use this and see if we can coordinate a few of us going in together on a pack. Otherwise have to order singles online. Hope you can find yours Lantus Pen single locally.

BRAVA!!! Great news! Lantus is a U100 insulin (orange cap), so throw away your Vetsulin U40 syringes so you don't make a mistake some early morning. I keep Rusty's insulin pen in a small cardboard box. I made a bubblewrap sleeve to fit the pen. The sleeve and the box help to keep the insulin protected from variations in your 'fridge's temperature. I try to keep my 'fridge between 38 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Good luck!

Ella & Rusty

Thank you so much Taffy's Mama! I called my CVS and they won't split the box but I was able to find a Rite Aid by my house that will sell me an individual pen for $89. The Vestulin is approx. $60 from my vet so it's not much difference to get the lantus. I am so thrilled about this. Now I just need my vet to write me the script today. Calling again here in a moment to pester again. :blackeye:

Will I need two separate scripts for the Lantus since I will order the one pen from Rite Aid and then try to order for the future from the Canadian pharmacy?
Barbara had mentioned a Lantus coupon for one pen for $10. I went to the Lantus site and printed off the coupon. I don't know if it will work or not yet since I have to get my vet to call the prescription in for a pen (unlike Mark's that will send out a vial or pen with the same prescription). And bummer, I just read above that Walmart or Walgreens won't sell a single pen. I may still try...

I don't think you will need two prescriptions. I took a picture of the prescription with my phone and e-mailed it to Mark's. They got it and held it on file for me till I needed it. I took the same prescription to Walmart and got a vial for $288.

I recently used the discount card at Rite Aid and got my pen for $10, and it is good for a year.

Check out this thread:
Lantus $10
Wish we had a Rite Aid or CVS, but nope. So glad you got one though. I honestly don't need one since I got my 5 pens yesterday from Mark's. I just thought one for travel would be nice and for only $10!

@Jeff Davis Hi Jeff, I had to call around to multiple pharmacies to find one who would break a set and found that the rite aid down the street from me (how lucky is that) was willing to do so. She explained that they break their boxes because some insurance companies only allow 90 day supplies before a new script and a diabetic patient would inevitably need a half a pen or so to meet the 90 day supply so it only made sense to split the box. I would suggest calling around and seeing if you can find a pharmacy that will do so. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Please please PLEASE follow this advice provided by Ella. My husband decided to help out and give our Ozzy his insulin dose one morning to be sweet to me so I could sleep in for once, and he grabbed the box of the old vestulin U 40 syringes and accidentally overdosed our kitty. Get rid of the old syringes so you don't make the same mistake we did. It's easy to accidentally grab the wrong one when you're tired and sleepy in the morning.

Thanks. I tried our local Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens but non were willing to sell pens individually here in Southern Oregon. As I mentioned Vetrexdirect sells individual pens so I ordered through them and should be here tomorrow so I can get Sketch started on insulin.
By the way I love The Ozzy Pawzbourne name...thats great!
