I'm going to call the vet, but I thought someone here might have some advice or be able to refer me to another site. My civvie cat, Looloo, was diagnosed about a week and a half ago with asthma. She had been coughing quite a bit. The vet put her on steroids (prednisolone). The cough seemed to clear up immediately and stayed cleared up for the first week. A couple of days ago she started coughing a little again, then last night I noticed she wasn't eating much. Tonight she has congestion (loud breathing) in her upper respiratory tract (at least). She's hasn't coughed, but she's not eating and seems very uncomfortable. I know this is a diabetes board, but everyone here is so knowledgable that I thought someone might have had experience with this sort of thing. I don't want to keep her on the steroids long, and besides, there is something else going on now too with the congestion and not eating. I'll do a little more research on other sites, but would love some advice. Thanks!

Hi Donaleen. She's been eating mostly Fancy Feast Classics with some Wellness Core and grain-free. Does Fancy Feast have grain? I'm on my exercise bike or I'd go look. I hate having her on the steroid. Have vet appt in morning. She's definitely got some sort of respiratory infection now too.

All the FF labels I read have gluten, which is the worst part of the grain. I was looking for medium and high carb foods to treat low BG incidents. I gave up and I am going to use maple syrup or honey. Today when Ozy went too low too fast I gave him a small piece of bacon with a drop of maple syrup. He loved it.

Either Sienne or Marje commented that many cats have a problem with grains. Ozy didn't always have a problem but he became asthmatic. The grain free thing was something I tried and I was surprised by how well it worked.

That doesn't say it will necessarily work for you but I don't think it will hurt to try.

Thanks Donaleen and Wendy! Well, they gave antibiotics for respiratory infection. Said lungs sounded good so reducing steroid. I really want her off the drugs, so will try the grain free only. I also switched out a down comforter from guest room to our room where she sleeps. This was about the time the asthma flared up. So I'll switch that again in case of possible allergy there. Left for work just after I got her home from vet this morning, so hopefully she's doing better when I get home.

Thanks for asking Deb! She seems quite a bit better although still not eating a lot. I think, however, that she's partly just being finicky because when I put down dried turkey treats, she gobbles them up. Dinner was Wellness (trying grain-free) and she prefers Fancy Feast. She also gobbles up the pill pocket treats that her pills are in. I'll wait a bit, but if she won't eat the Wellness (she nibbled a bit), I'll have to go back to Fancy Feast at least till she gets through the respiratory infection. Our kitties sure make our lives complicated, don't they? (But worth every minute of it!)

If you don't want to keep her on the pred, then you'll have to transition to inhaled meds. Asthma is a chronic disease that requires daily treatment. The Fritz site that Jill gave you is a great resource for feline asthma.
