Ok pls I need help. I spoke with the vet who told me Tigera has protein in her urine and needs to go on low protein diet asap or she can be in kidney failure. She was diagnosed last Friday with diabetes. He asked me what her average readings have been I told him 16 he says these are way too high and asked if I’m still doing the 1.5U which I lied and said yes (I’m doing 1U) he wants me to increase her dose asap to 2U he said she won’t go hypo with these numbers. She is very lethargic and I have no idea what to feed her ! I’ve been told high protein low carbs for diabetes control and now he is saying low protein food and regulate her diabetes with insulin please help us Her protein creatinine ratio in her urinalysis was 0.3 and the normal range is 0.0-0.2- also she get severely constipated often. I don’t know what to feed her that will be low carbs, and high fibre the list on Dr Pierson tab doesn’t include fibre she’s been constipated all week only passed bowel yesterday I also add fibre to her diet (earth md digestive care )

Trace protein in an unregulated diabetic who is also dehydrated does not mean kidney failure.
Even if your cat were in kidney failure, low protein is not called for until end stage, even if then. That is very old school thinking. Reread Dr Lisa's site, with attention to her section on kidney disease.
In the meantime, the diabetes is the most important thing to focus on.

I’m going to second what Karen said! The idea of low protein for kidney issues is old school thinking. There is now the belief that it not needed to limit protein until end stages. Even Weruva (a pet food company) has come out with a line of food in the US that is specific to kidney disease. It’s called Wx which is a take on Rx (as in prescription food). The Wx food is as low in phosphorus as Rx food, but it’s high in protein. Low protein has shown to increase muscle wasting and weight loss in kidney kitties. You may just have to stand up to your vet, who

Thank you what do I do about her insulin dose ? Should I be increasing it? Wouldn’t her protein in the urine get worse if her diabetes continues to be uncontrollable?

Thank you - how can I regulate her diabetes better ? I’ve dropped her to 1U for past week her vet dosage was 1.5

You are using an insulin that is for dogs. Another reason to question your vet’s advice. I would switch to lantus. You are so early in fd and it’s cat appropriate.

No one is going to be able to advise you on increasing the dose before a curve is done. You've been at this for less than a week and it's still very early.

While we usually prefer lantus over most other insulins, Antonella is a shift worker and although she took the last week off to take care of Tigera, she has to return to work so I'm suggesting she find a vet that will prescribe ProZinc since it's dosing has more "wiggle room" than Lantus does.

It's a shame too since she's in Canada, she could get Lantus OTC and wouldn't have to bother with her crazy vet but hopefully the new one will be willing to prescribe ProZinc once Antonella explains that she can't always guarantee every 12 hour dosing (of course I've also heard a lot of vets say Lantus can be off "an hour or two"....they obviously don't understand how Lantus works best)

Even a vet at the practice I use told me the first day they used to give insulin at 3 on days they left early which was hours early. Needless to say she’s not my vet.

Thanks for clarifying, @Chris & China (GA) I saw Canada and thought why not use lantus.

Thank you Chris. By the way how much wiggle room is with the prozinc?

(Since this is the most recent thread, you are good to increase tonight. Since you only have the pen, you have to go up to 1.5U)

If you do want to feed low carb/ low phosphorus wet foods and Tigera
likes pates you can look at weruva
https://weruva.com/nutrition-landing/pates-ni/
With weruva foods
You want the metabolizable energy profile percentage of carbs to be less than 10%, and the phosphorus which Weruva lists in Minerals to be less than 250 mg per 100 cals. So you have to look at two different places in the Weruva charts.

When you go to the weruva site and click on one of the pic of the food , click on Detailed Nutritional information that's to the left under Guaranteed Analysis

Thank you I will look. She is having major constipation despite me adding restoralax and digestive aid fibre to her meals . Her vet said she didn’t need iv fluids as long as she is eating and drinking but I’m taking her to another vet today. As far as I know Weruva has low fibre content as well. Tiki is 0 fibre and that’s what she was eating this past week
