Help, my Sweet Pea has liqui-poo!

It started on day 2. We are now one week a family and it continues all but one solid big long poo just two days ago.
Daily liqui-poo's up to 3 times a day and now it's getting all over as he (bless his heart) try's real hard to bury it and it gets on his paws and he tracks it around.

At first I thought it was diet change as he was on Science Diet crack only over at the shelter. Now altho on wet he still has a bowl out of SD but has never once touched it.

Poor thing looks like he has cramps this morning and I'm so sad for him. What should I give him????
And btw, he still never misses a meal all the while begging for more. He does love to eat.

I'll try raw rabbit first.
I've been wanting to get him on a meal of that a day anyway.

Now I know why he's been hiding so much. Poor baby has cramps. :sad:

Lori, have you tried some fortiflora? That stuff is like magic with Bandit when he has runny poo issues.

He get's runny poo when he has a new canned food, so it might be the transition. If that's the case the fortiflora will definitely help. I now know also that Bandit will get runny poo sometimes if he eats a food higher in fat.

Other possibilities might be a food allergy (what canned food are you feeding?), or a parasite. Bandit had hookworms once and it was awful.
 
He really should be seen by a vet. He could be dehydrated at this point. If he has Irritable Bowel they can give you a script for Flagyl along with the fluids. He can lose electrolytes quickly and I can promise you, seeing a potassium crash is scary stuff.

I agree--if it's gone on this long he should go to the vet. If it is a parasite, they'll need to do some tests, so you you might want to gather a fresh sample for them (I know, ewwww).
 
I called a vet, a new one. I made an appointment for Friday but I can tell he is not dehydrated by the methods I know of...I mean his skin bounces back easy and all. I do have fluids and a hook up here, would it be irresponsible of me to administer if I did notice dehydration Jenn? In the mean time I can gather a sample. uMmmmmm, just how fresh exactly does it need to be for full effective examination? YOu know I will NOT leave him overnight. He was returned by his last adopter to the shelter and I will not put him thru that insecurity and terror so quickly or ever again.
 
hmmmm, on 2nd thought i just gave him a thorough once over and he may be dehyrated after all.
Help. I want to sub Q him but I have to go to work in about an hour or less.

The best way to check dehydration on a kitty is by touching the gums and seeing if they are sticky. The skin test is better for checking humans. I would not give subq fluids to a new kitty without getting bloodwork and heart checked first. If there's an underlying heart condition that you don't know about, subq's can be extremely dangerous.
 
Lori, maybe add some extra water to his food as a stop gap measure.

When he's at the vet, have him checked for parasites. All sorts of things are possible with him coming from a shelter. Emme had liquid poo from Giardia and it took forever to dx.

If his appointment is on Friday I would collect it as close to the appt. time as possible. It's ok if there's some litter on the outside as long as it's not all mixed through it. If you have to collect the sample the night before, make sure you refrigerate it (Yes, I know it's gross!).

But the general rule of thumb is that it's good for 12 hours, or 24 if refrigerated.

Well, I just came home from an anxiety ridden day. I am unequipped to even imagine Sweet Pea being ill.
I brought home some rqw chicken as they are all out of raw rabbit. Diane came over twice today to hang out with him....she lives right next door. She has carte blanch as Sweet Pea has really taken to her. I told her to come in whenever she needs a kitty fix.

Here's the story.
I have liquid poo in my bed. On my carpet. On my throw rug. And possibly places I can't see.
His paws were covered in it. Twice.
And he does'nt like mama cleaning his paws so that was a midnight fight and another night of not sleeping.

How...you might wonder did I discover the liqui-poo in the middle of the night?
Fair question.
Sometime around 1am he came to my face to cuddle, I let him under the sheet (it's a heat wave even at night now....hard to keep windows and doors closed as it is 80 freakin degree's) I was snuggelin an kissin on him and then suddenly I go "PHew!"
And I feel all this wetness even on my face ... I turn on the light and angry(2)_cat and no freakin way. I had liqui-poo on my hands...my face...my sheets. And on him.

I was soooooo freaked out.

Why dear lord, why do I get these cats who bring the most horrid gunck to mama as a showing of love.
This parralles Tom's gifts of headless rodents and blood stain throw rugs.

I gotta go do laundry now.

I do love the little orinch guy but sheesh.....I litterally was burying my face in his crappy filled paws last night...so you tell me.

Lori, I'm sorry to hear that Sweet Pea isn't feeling well. Radar started having liquid poo today....what are you feeding Sweet Pea? We've been feeding Radar Merricks canned varieties.
 
Oh Lori, I can't tell you how that reminds me of Beauregard during The Dark Times. There were periods when I'd have to wash all the bedding two or three days in a row. And the rugs. And shampoo the carpet in areas. And the couch (I finally had to break down and get a washable cover, fer Pete's sake). And and and. It was just awful and I know how frustrating it can be, with the absolute worst part being that you know how much it hurts to have a bout of diarrhea that bad. Poor little Theodore Sweet Pea.

When Boo had a episodes like that, the only thing that we tried which helped was a dose or two of Metronidazole - and believe me, we tried everything over the course of two years. I don't know if you have a vet whom you trust enough to take a look at Theo for underlying issues and see if your little guy is a good candidate to try some Met, but it might be worth a try. That stuff worked when nothing else did.

Oh dearest Mystery...I do remember your Dark Times. Will never forget...and I don't think this is as bad.. I know its not. I will be trying EVERYTHING. I am desperately hoping it is just a case of food transition and nerves from the move.
His SD dry is always available to him, that's what he ate at the shelter....but he likes the good stuff.
He is currently eating ff, the gluton free flavors, and hopefully will soon have some raw rabbit.
He turned his nose up to the raw chicken...but I have to nuke it to defrost it and it may be more appealing to him once it thaws on its own.
I do love his Sweet Pea'ness and I'll do whatever it takes to get him well.
He looks really good tonight. Playful, attentive, and eating.
I put him in Diane's house while I vacuumed the place and she said he meowed at the door the minute I left....and I thought he really loved her. She said he looked worried I had abandoned him.

Well that just tugged at my heartstrings in the worst way as you can imagine.
For better or worse we are stuck with each other for the rest of our lives....who ever outlives the other.

i dont know the background, did u get him with any medical records?

i have to agree with the others he should be checked out - hopefully the vetty visit friday will give u some answers, sorry about the poo mess, hopefully doesnt happen again before he meets the new vet.

Thank you Jeanne. Sweet Pea appears for the most part to be feeling good. Still liqui-poo but only in the box and not so much that he has dug himself all into it.
He is playing, preening, purring, peeing and liqui-pooing.
Occassionally he squats into a funny crouth...I'm thinking..cramp?
But he is showing alot of love and good spirits.

The store was out of raw rabbit so I brought him raw chicken....No Way Mama to that. Tom did'nt like it either.
So, we wait for the raw rabbit to come in.
And that Vet app't.
You KNOW how much I do not want to do that right?
And he was brought back to the shelter by his last adopters and I'm so worried that a trip right now will scare and upset him terribly.
The vets office was very nice on the phone about my concerns. They are leaving the appointment open for us. They understand me not wanting to take him anywhere so soon.
Maybe it is just the change of food and the change of environment.
He is such a sweet and nice pussy cat. So loving. Can't imagine someone brought him back. Just cause he likes to talk at night :-D

As far as that liqui-poo goes, we had that same problem with our little cat G. It was a chronic problem and a stinky one at that. He was treated for tape worms, tested three times for other parasites, put on an elimination diet including novel proteins. Nothing seemed to help. Our vet then prescribed Metronidazole (Flagyl) which worked, but we had to have it specially compounded to get G to take it which was kind of expensive. I decided to start adding 1/4 teaspoon of psyllium husk powder to his canned food twice a day which helped firm his poop some. But it was not until I started adding FortiFlora every other day along with the psyllium that we had real improvement. As long as we continue with both the psyllium powder and the FortiFlora, G has normal stools. G's much happier now and so are we!

My Gadget was a returned to the shelter by his former mom's boyfriend (she moved out and left the cat :-x ). I hated to take him to the vet the day after I got him to be neutered, but at a year old it was time to do it! So I told myself that because I'm a good kitty mom I did what I had to do. When I picked him up he was so happy to see me again! I gave lots of extra cuddles and kisses and now he knows he has a home. Thankfully my vet is good about giving cat treats to them each time I take one in, that helps keeps things a little friendlier too. Maybe carry some kind of treat and ask the vet to give it to your cat while there, to help keep things friendly?

Hope the liqui-poo gets resolved!

Sooo happy to read about the hard poooo! Go sweetpea/theo go! Sorry I have not posted as I did not recognize the name :oops: and have not been constistanly on here posting as of late.
What do you think you did that made him have a hard pooo?
The vet gave me some pro-pectalin for Slappy that I also used for Ittle Sista when she went thru a bout of liqui-poo. I only had to give her 2 doses and the problem was solved.
Did you keep your vetbean visit? If so, did they check his blood pressure too? I know that when the vet gave Gumpy fluids, she had a seizure within 2 hours later and the er told me it was due to her high bp. She could not handle that much fluid at one time. The new vet gave her fluids again (without asking first) but assured me that they did not give much and she actually did ok that time.

Yes Karen, I do think that is what it is. Food change and his big move into his furever home....likely stress poo.
