This evening Sampson is not walking very well at all. He is 16 1/2 and may have had something happen to his leg not sure. He can't go far and lays immediatlely on his side. We stopped insulin after an episdoe 4 weeks ago after a visit to an after hours emergency clinic and under Vet's orders. I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon but will probably be up all night worried about him. Does anyone have any ideas about this sort of crumpling on his side. He is also a little cranky when I pet him, which isn't always unusual. Can he go hypoglycemic without insulin??

Thanks so much,

Vicki & Sammy

No - if he has not had insulin for 4 weeks, he cannot be hypoglycemic. He can however have very high blood sugar and ketones. I would be quite concerned about the possibility of high blood glucose and ketones. Do you have test strips? Can you test his urine?

I read your other post from January 7th also. I do not want to alarm you but you should get your cat your into the vet now. This sounds like an emewrgency. If he has been without insulin for four weeks his BG is probably sky high and he may have DKA or neuropathy. I don't understand why your vet went from doubling the dose to taking him off the insulin. Frankly that doesn't make any sence. Was it maybe the ER vet who told you to stop the insulin until you went back to your regular vet? You might want to consider getting another vet once this emergency is over. I can't emphasis enough that you should get your cat to a vet ASAP this could b e life threatening!

I will try to get you some feedback from olther board members who might be up but they will probably tell you the same thing.

Hi I posted on the vetsulin ISG as well. I do agree that this is not something that should wait. Please take your Sampson to an ER and have him checked out asap.
it is not normal, it could be DKA, it could be cardio, it could be many things, but none of them should wait to be seen to.

Please do let us know how he is.

Paws are crossed for you guys.

We have an emergency here!

Dearest Vicki, and, of course, you too, sweet Sammy,

Is he eating?

Let me just tell you what I saw with Giz, okay?

She wasn't eating much, if anything. She developed walking difficulties with her hind legs. She was drinking and peeing gallons. I sadly had no clue about diabetes... This all happened within two days...

She was DKA -- diabetic ketoacidosis (sp?) -- at her diagnosis -- meaning seriously high blood sugar and uncontrolled diabetes. She spent three days in ICU at the nearest ER hospital... She was 14 at the time and we were incredibly lucky to have another four years together...

No, Sammy can't go hypoglycemic without insulin. He can, however, go into DKA and needs to be seen as soon as is humanly possible. Once this happens they need lots of kinds of fluids...

I do not mean to scare you, Vicki, but Sammy needs help now... Time can make a huge difference, if you're seeing these symptoms...

I'll stay up with you, okay?

Love and urging hugs,
Deb

Get to an emergency vet NOW. When my Sam went into DKA, he spent 7 days in the hospital and came very close to dying. Your cat is in serious distress. He needs help immediately.

it could be any number of things. i'd test for infection, too. kidney/bladder infections can cause the same symptoms. definitely vet time, asap.

Since we haven't heard from Sampson's Mom that could be good or bad. I am hoping she brought him to the vet last night or this morning. I don't want to think about the alternative yet. This may be a good time for the healing vines the other board member sends and lighting some cyber candles.

Hi Vicki. How is Sampson doing now? Has he been eating okay? What time is your vet appointment, today?
Please let us know how it goes. We are all concerned, okay?

Sampson's mother posted on the thread I started to get attention to her post. She was asking a question about meters? I still don't know if she brought Sampson to the vet yet.Several other readers said they were confused and so am I at this point :) ??? VICKY IF YOU READ THIS PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU HAVE TAKEN SAMPSON TO THE VET! IF YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN HIM PLEASE DO ASAP!!

Good News on Sampson. I took him to the VET yet again on Monday to have his glucose checked. I take him weekly. We are now down to 171 with diet. I have now put him on a wet kitten food Diet and we shall see. More good news (I think) I have purchased a one touch glucometer and practiced on his ear at the Vet's office. I need to do this myself and have a question for anyone that can give me advice. We are going to try this tonight & tomorrow night and see how he reacts at home. I will try & use all of the advice that I have been given by this group. What is the best times of day to check him? Keep in mind that I work full time and am gone a good portion of the day from 8 to 6 at least. They get fed around 7:30 a.m. & 6:00 p.m.

Thank you again.

Vicki & Sampson
