My pharmacy did not have the Alphatrak 2, so I bought the One Touch mini. I also bought Ketone strips. Should I return the one touch and get the Alphatrak? Why is the Alphatrak the one you all use? And what am I using the ketone strips for? What am I looking for? Completely overwhelmed. Help.

Hi,

I have no knowledge of Alphatrak as we use human ReliOn Prime meter.

But if you can change the prefix of you r post to a question mark than someone experienced will be along to help. Question mark at the title line draws more attention.

To do it go to your 1st original post and click on the Title Tools box on the upper right hand corner of the post window.

Thank you. Is that what you meant?

I meant that a question mark should appear in front of your title as prefix. There is a small drop down menu right where you typed the title body. Click on it choose question mark. Currently your title has no prefix.
If you go to the title tools, click on Edit Title than you will have an option to edit your title. Leave the text of the title as it is. Change only its prefix.:)

The AlphaTrak is a pets only meter and has to be bought from a vet or specialty store online. Its strips are extremely expensive and you'll go through a lot of them. That's why many people use a human meter. The ReliOn types from Walmart are popular but there are many others to choose from. It'll be easier for you to test if the meter's strips work with only a tiny blood drop. A pharmacist can advise if you want to ask about the one you bought.

Ketone test strips are used to test for ketones in the urine. If they're too high your kitty can become very ill with a complication called diabetic ketoacidosis. It can be life threatening and very expensive to treat. Ways to test urine:
  1. put the business end of the strip right in the urine stream
  2. put a shallow long handled spoon under kitty's backside while he/she is peeing
  3. cover the favourite area in the litter box with a few layers of plastic food wrap and push small depressions into it to catch urine.

Lol, I was typing and Kris came in and said everything I was going to (but better!).

So, I'll just say: welcome! And, it does get less overwhelming over time, but yeah, that first week or two with FD is a wild ride! We've all been there, and we are here to help!

Thank you. Can I out it into the litter she peed on? I use SwheatScoop. So it's all natural corn.

Ugh. Thank you. I know when some time goes by, I'll feel better.

I don't think that works very well. You have to wet the testing end of the strip, shake off the excess and time it for 15 seconds before checking the colour against the chart on the strip bottle.

Most of us use human meters, with the Relion Confirm or Micro being one of the big favorite. They are available at WalMart (if you live in the US)

They take the tiniest blood sample and the strips are affordable ($35.88/100)

The reason most of us don't use the AlphaTrak is the cost of the strips....they're routinely over $1 EACH
