I'm completely new to all this and frankly overwhelmed. Misty was diagnosed today, and did not receive insulin yet. The vet gave her an iv with vitamins and we're supposed to go back tomorrow. She still throws up and I'm afraid she'll remain dehydrated. Is there anything I can do to help her hold some water or wet food until we see the vet tomorrow? I appreciate anyvtips in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Did the vet say anything about ketones with the diagnosis?
If he didn't, ask about them tomorrow...its important to know if any were present or not
.
I would offer small amounts of food often. You may need an antinausea medication such as cerenia or ondansetron.
Its important your kitty eats, so offer any food she will eat at the moment even if it is not low carb.
With the insulin ask the vet to give you lantus insulin as that is a very good ca insulin and the starting dose should be 1/2 to 1 unit.
You dont need to buy expensive prescription food form the vet... low carb fancy feast pates are suitable

If your kitty is still not eating or vomiting tomorrow, please ask for an injection to strop the vomiting and some antinausea tablets to bring home.

Thank you so much!!
No problem at all :cat: I might as well give you the information now :cat:
Let me know if you would like to know where to purchase the U-100 syringes with half unit markings , where do you live. She's such a pretty kitty !

Here is some info

The 5 pens will last about a year, we use the pens just like a vial, you would just insert the syringe it the gray rubber stopper on the pen and draw out your insulin
Its generic lantus

Or this one also

I see some members will call CVS, Rite Aid, Costco, Walgreen's, to get the price for 5 pens

. I paid $175 for a box of 5 pens at Walmart pharmacy, but GoodRX coupon says you can get it for around $90 if you have a Rite Aid pharmacy near you.

We don't use the pen because you can only adjust the dose by full units, we adjust the dose by 0.25 units at a time. Are the U-100 syringes you already have do they have half unit markings

Just take the cap off the pen and use a U100 syringes and pull the insulin out of the pen!

Let us know how you make out at the vet appointment tomorrow.
I can suggest a glucose meter to test her BG , where to buy it ,and some tips on testing

Has your vet talked to you about giving Misty fluids at home as needed? Ondansetron works great for nausea....
Cerenia is also good and the injectable works fast but it does burn when injected, if you give it in the fluid bubble it will alleviate that issue and works the same with no burning....
Keep us posted:bighug:

I gave her some last night and she threw up, she does it every 3 hours or so. I appreciate so much all the information, I'm about to take her to the vet now. Yes, if possible I'd like to know where I can get a BG meter and tests and what kind to get. Thank you again! Dominika

If you live in the US you can buy a ReliOn meter from Walmart for $9 amd a box of 100 test strips for $17.88.
You will also need a box of 26 or 28 gauge lancets and some cotton rounds to hold behind the ear. If you don’t live in theIS you can buy a human glucose meter at most pharmacies.
Don’t be talked into getting a pet meter. They are too expensive to run and are not necessary.

I agree with everything Bron has said. It is critical that your kitty be tested for ketones. Time is really of the essence. She could already be in DKA, which is life threatening and requires immediate hospitalization. When are you returning to the vet? Do you know if they checked her urine for ketones? When my diabetic boy went into DKA, he was vomiting a ton and couldn’t keep anything down. He ended up in the hospital for a week.

Always aim for the sweet spot warm the ears up first, you can put rice in a sock and put it in the microwave, test it on the inside of your wrist to be sure it's not to hot, like you would test a babies bottle. You can fill a pill bottle with warm water and roll it on the ears also.Just keep rubbing the ears with your fingers to warm them up

6. As the ears get used to bleeding and grow more capilares, it gets easier to get the amount of blood you need on the first try. If he won’t stand still, you can get the blood onto a clean finger nail and test from there.
When you do get some blood you can try milking the ear.
Get you finger and gently push up toward the blood , more will appear
You will put the cotton round behind his ear in case you poke your finger, after you are done testing you will fold the cotton round over his ear to stop the bleeding , press gently for about 20 seconds until it stops
Get 26 or 28 gauge lancets
A lot of us use the lancets to test freehand not the lancing device
I find it better to see where I'm aiming
Look at the lancet under a light and you will see one side is curved upward, that's the side you want to poke with
