Help! Cat’s sugar always high

Hi all,

We’ve had such a roller coaster with our 5 year old cat Ollie this year who got diagnosed with diabetes two months after we brought a new baby home. Long story short he went into remission once, but his diabetes has been back for about two months, and we need help! His sugar is constantly in the 500s, his litter box is insane, and he wakes us and the baby multiple times a night with incessant meowing for food.

He’s on 1.5 units of Lantus twice a day (already up from 1 unit). I went back to the vet last week to get a re-demonstration on how to give shots but it looks like I’m doing that part right. Does he just need more insulin? The vet is hesitant to raise his dose… I’m home testing his sugar.

Congrats on the new baby. Would it be possible for you to set up a spreadsheet if testing at home? Then fill in two weeks of tests.

We have a saying here, ECID or every cat is different. 1.5 units is no where near what I'd call a large dose of insulin.

If you can set up a spreadsheet with the home testing data, we can help you with dosing. Information on the spreadsheet and other questions we often ask and like in the signature detailed in this post: New? How You Can Help Us Help You!

Did the vet look at his teeth and run bloodwork after he fell out of remission? Needing a dental is one of the most common reasons cats fall out of remission. That and not eating food appropriate for a diabetic cat. Or steroids.
