Help! Cat is getting teeth pulled in a few hours, not sure what to do.

My vet advised to give him 1/2 can of food and 1/2 dose in insulin 2-4 hours before his appointment. It's 3 hours before and his BG is 72. I'm not sure if I can in good faith give him insulin, but I don't want to not follow the vets instruction. If I choose to skip the insulin, whish I feel is the best solution, does that mean there's no point in giving him the 1/2 can of food?

I just retested and he's at 86. I think I'm going to skip both the insulin and food. I believe the food was only recommended because I was giving insulin, because I know usually they say no food. I realize I probably answered my own question here, but perhaps others can chime in to say if I've done the right thing or not? Perhaps in can be useful info for someone else in the future. Thanks!

Hey - for whatever it's worth, we've had 5 cats now go under anesthesia for dental procedures. For all 5, we were told no food after 10pm and 1/2 dose of insulin the morning before. I think the food was considered an aspiration risk and we were asked to abide by that pretty strictly (at least stop feeding by midnight).

Good luck with the dental procedure! I hope Artemis recovers quickly and enjoys his nice clean toothies after :)

On April 8th Corky had a dental cleaning, I was just as nervous as you, I followed the instructions on the link below, which were correct as the Vet, please know that the glucose level will be high after the dental treatment, but it will level off by nighttime, you can look at Corky's Spreadsheet for that day, although all cats are different, Corky took the treatment like a champ, Good luck;)
PS if you see the SS you will notice that his BG was 97 and still fed and gave insulin, his shot is at 6:00 am, appointment at 9:00 AM but actually got anesthesia at 11:00 AM, prep time takes a while before procedure, when he got home from the procedure it was 244,he has been tightly regulated for a couple of years, by night time his BG was perfect. and I am glad I gave the shot

A non- diabetic cats' glucose level is between 50-120 this is an ideal diabetic cats' glucose number should be as well with insulin treatment, what insulin are you using?
