HELP: Bouncy Boops- Skipping shot doesn't seem to be working. :(

I think we are clearing the bounce! Where do we go from here? No insulin? OTJ trial? .1 but give food before we go to bed? I DON"T want another bounce!!!

You might try skipping tonight, feeding, and getting a +2 to see what the food does to the glucose levels. If they drop with eating, you could be ready for an OTJ trial.

I think I'd go ahead and shoot the .1 tonight if it were my cat, as long as you're going to be able to test tonight and have the supplies you need in case Boops drops too low

If you get a +1 and +2 that might let you intervene sooner if you need to

Maybe he isn't on a 12 hour schedule; some cats do longer cycles, especially with Levemir.

Some cats, as they are going off insulin, may need it less often than every 12 hours. Like every 14 or 16 or 18 or ... so you wind up chasing the numbers and shooting when they are high enough for it to be safe, based on the test data.

This is all mind-boggling. Just when I think I'm beginning to make sense of things, something crazy happens. So, why did he go so high if he may be potentially coming off of insulin?

Because he might have gone too low and triggered compensatory hormones which release stored glucose (glycogen). We call this bouncing. It can take 3 days to clear a bounce.
You may actually need a shorter acting insulin than Levemir, maybe a U-40 insulin like ProZinc.

The problem with the 0.25 unit dose is that he went too low for safety - 32 mg/dL - and could have had a hypoglycemic attack, which can be fatal.
About the only work around to be able to go back to 0.25 units would be to deliberately increase the carb level slightly.

Also, with Lantus and Levemir, shooting early is like a dose increase and shooting late is like a dose decrease because the amount of overlap increases and decreases respectively. Because of this, we usually adjust times by either 15 minutes per shot, or by 30 minutes once a day.

hmmm, well this is a conundrum.

he did clear the bounce, but just got to blue numbers, the 135 this afternoon. The trouble is you can't just take him back to 0.25u because it took him into the 30's.

Any chance he got into contraband today? He nibble any cookies or get some bread or dry food?

Are you doing ok measuring that tiny dose? At this dose a little more or less might make a difference in his blood sugar. It's difficult to measure but be as consistent as you can. Syringe markings are really inconsistent.

Bounces are part of this. Try not to let it make you crazy.

I'd hold the 0.1u and shoot on time for the next little while.
