Hello! I’m Bash’s Mom - Bash is a 7 year old chatty rescue kitty who was just diagnosed with diabetes today. I started noticing him drinking more water maybe a month ago, but it happened to correspond to a change in food so we thought it was that. Fast forward to last week and his back legs started rapidly losing strength. After a vet visit yesterday, turns out our boy has diabetes. I wish I would have put it all together sooner, but here we are. Good news is, the rest of his bloodwork came back great. We start him on insulin on Thursday (not sure what kind yet or the dosage, will find out at the appointment) and my meter and supplies should arrive on Friday from Amazon (soonest it could get here with the holiday). Vet started out recommending that I test at home, which really made me feel like my furbaby is in good hands. Right now I’m just trying to research as much as I can - information is power and all that - so I can be as prepared as possible.
Any words of advice for a newbie? (I know, the most generic thing I could ask, but I’m a bit overwhelmed)

Hello and welcome to FDMB. Sorry you needed to find us but glad that you did.

The diagnosis of diabetes is overwhelming but it is totally treatable and with a Mom who is so proactive, Bash is in good hands. And kudos to your vet for suggesting home testing. We can help you with testing, dosing, food choices or just be there for some moral support as you get your new routine down pat with Bash. The learning curve can be a little steep but in a few short weeks, you'll be feeling much more comfortable with the situation.

We're here to help in any way we can so gather those questions and join us over on the HEALTH FORUM where we can help you learn the steps to the sugar dance.

I'm not crying at work, you're crying at work lol :bighug: thank you for the kind words and words of welcome! I already am feeling better knowing I'm not alone in this. Heading to the Health Forum now to start reading up and asking questions!

Deep breath, hold, release, deep breath, hold, release, deep breath, hold, release, deep breath, hold, release

I’ve done this a few times tonight already. It seems like so much. I’m so nervous about the testing. What if I can’t get a test before I need to go to work? Can I still give him a dose? He will be home alone all day... ahh. I’m so worried.
