Hi everyone,
I think I last posted about 3 years ago when my old tabby girl (Baby) had diabetes. She lasted for over 4 yrs and died of old age at 19 and a bit.

Now I've had my lovely 11 yr old neuter (Harry) diagnosed with diabetes. He lost so much weight very quickly and also had a stomach infection and conjunctivitis so was feeling quite sorry for himself. Both infections have cleared up with antibiotics and ointment. So I'm here to catch up on the latest developments in diabetes management.

He was started on Caninsulin on Christmas Eve, 1 unit twice a day to start over Christmas period and back to the vets in a couple of days for another glucose curve and dosage adjustment. I have been BG testing pre-shot only at present and his readings are still very high ( pre-insulin around 27-30)

I would like to ask about food. Does anyone know the best of the UK brand foods to give him? I have some of the Royal Canin diabetic dried food, it did work very well with Baby but he does prefer wet food really.

Welcome, but sorry you had to come back.

Caninsulin is not being used much in the states, as there have been quality control problems and vets have been warned not to prescribe it. But I "think" the issues are not in Europe so it may be better there. Here is the warning for the US: Vetsulin issues And here is the user guide: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=302 As you probably know, it tends to hit hard and fast and not last the whole cycle. But I know other insulins that are more popular in the US are not always available in Europe. Some of our GB members will be along to advise.

We do use American levels to have a common "language", so please multiply your numbers by 18. If you want to set up a spreadsheet, we have a great new color coded one that will allow you to enter your values and us to see them multiplied. Setting up a spreadsheet Choose the World version.

Felix fish flavours in jelly and A.G.A.I.L are his regular food so I will continue with that for now. The spreadsheet looks very like useful tool, have downloaded it for later use.
Yes, I forgot about the different units Europe/USA. It's all coming back to me now. His highest reading is around 485 then, seems awfully high. I do hope he will do OK he is such an angel and stunningly beautiful. I think he may have put a bit of weight on over Christmas but he is still pitifully thin.
I don't think the recall affected UK suppiles of Caninsulin, nothing in the press and I'm sure my vet would have known, she seems pretty clued up.

Hi

I have found KiteKat in jelly to be great for my boy! I know the fish flavours are not the best for him, but he loves them and atm they are keeping his numbers pretty low!.

My vet hadnt heard about the caninsulin recall either, but they are not very up on db.

Hi and welcome back!

Can't help much with the food over there as I am in the US. But I did want to touch on your new boy being dxed at around 485. I recently adopted a diabetic boy from this board who sounds a lot like your new fellow. Max (my guy) was also dxed at 485, we started him on Lantus and switched his diet to canned food and within just a few weeks he was in remission and has now been off the juice for over a month.

I know you already know about home testing etc. But just wanted to tell you that yeah that is high but not something that can't be over come. Max was only 10.5 lbs when I adopted him and a walking rack of bones. Today he is sitting in my lap, making biscuits and weighing a nice 13.5 lbs. Hope your guy can do the same. Sorry you had to come back but at least this time you knew where to come. =)

Reassuring to know that his BG numbers are not unusual. He does seem to have put weight on over the last couple of days, not quite so bony along his spine. This morning he wandered upstairs to his favourite bed all by himself so I think he is feeling stronger.
I'm pleased about the food though, Felix and Whiskas are the main best sellers here, often the cheapest, so good to know they are fine for him as well as the others.
